Mazda2 Lives On For 2026 With Motorsports Variant, New Infotainment System

More than a decade since it launched, the Mazda2 is proving to be the sub-compact that refuses to die. Just when you thought that it’ll be retired, Mazda is continuing to give it a slew of updates, particularly in its home market of Japan.

Refreshed continuously throughout its lifecycle, including a big one in 2019 (and another one in 2022/2024), the Mazda2 gets a longer list of standard features for 2026 in Japan including 60/40 split-folding rear seats, rear privacy glass, a 360-degree camera, front & rear parking sensors, and an auto-dimming rearview camera.

Remarkably, Mazda was also able to shoehorn their next-generation Mazda Connect system. Used already in the Mazda3, CX-60, CX-90, and even the MX-5, this 8.8-inch screen now finds its way into the sub-compact hatchback.

However, the best news of all is a power bump to its 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine, at least when it comes to a motorsports-oriented variant called the Mazda2 15MB (Motorsports-Based).

The Mazda2 15MB’s P5-VPS 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine now makes 116 horsepower (85 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 149 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm—a jump of 6 PS and 7 Nm—from the regular Mazda2. It’s only available with a 6-speed manual with different ratios, including its final drive.

Along with the added power and revised gearbox, the Mazda2 15MB has also undergone a weight reduction of 50 kilograms (curb weight of 1,040 kilograms) over the standard Mazda2 by removing a lot of its comfort features, including ADAS.

With this development, it looks like the Mazda2 lives on at least through the 2026 model year. A possible replacement, however, is in the horizon which was shown at the Japan Mobility Show as the Vision-X Compact Concept.

    1. With a price of 1.25M as of this writing, it won't exactly sell that much.

    3. I kinda wonder now where Mazda PH sources their 2? With that kind of pricing, maybe straight from Japan?

    5. It's priced like a crossover SUV
It's got multiple airbags and ADAS but regular Pinoy car buyers would rather buy something else.
They're giving away 200,000 Peso cash discount for the Mazda 2 hatchback with ADAS in order to sell more units.

  4. I have one of the Crimson Edition from 2018. Still only at 19k km, might be one of the lowest mileage Mazda 2 here locally. I love it so much and would probably keep it for many more years. Never gave me any headaches. In case you guys are wondering, I also own a 2019 Mazda 3, reason for the 2's low mileage..

    3. Interesting choice owning both a Mazda 2 and a Mazda 3. It’s basically the same experience twice, just with slightly different levels of underpowered. But hey, some people collect stamps, others collect slow hatchbacks. We all have our hobbies.
