Subaru Revives A 30-Year Engine To Make The Subaru BRZ Faster In Racing

Subaru’s motorsports division, STI, is taking an interesting step to make its Super GT GT300 racer, the Subaru BRZ GT300 competitive for the 2026 racing season. Subaru and STI just announced that they’re retiring the long-serving EJ20 turbo flat-4 motor in favor of a twin turbocharged flat-6.

Using a flat-6 engine for motorsports conjures up images of Porsche and its highly successful 911, but for Subaru, they’re taking a very different approach. STI is dusting off the EG33 3.0-liter flat-6, an engine last used in a production Subaru (the Alcyone SVX) around 30 years ago as basis for their new twin turbocharged racing engine.

Despite its age, the EG33 is renowned among Subaru enthusiasts for its durability. The stock engine is built out of aluminum, but had cast-iron cylinder liners. It also had thick sleeves and strong bearings. As a result, it could handle a significant amount of turbo boost—north of 1,000 horsepower in some cases.

With the Subaru BRZ GT300’s twin, the Toyota GR 86 GT300 already using the Lexus IS F’s 2UR-GSE V8, STI decision to revive the 30-year old engine will help them with better speed. Ultimately, they hope to score the season championship.

This year will be Subaru’s 15th year to participate in the Super GT GT300 class. Headed by team general manager Masahiro Ozawa, he’ll be supported by R&D Sport’s Minoru Sawada as team manager. The drivers will be Takuto Iguchi and Hideki Yamauchi, with reserve driver Hayato Okumoto.
