Toyota Motor PH Quietly Introduces 2021 Land Cruiser Prado

With the launch of the 2021 Toyota Fortuner, there were those who worried about the fate of Toyota’s venerable Land Cruiser Prado. Well, it seems we finally have our answer, albeit silently as Toyota Motor Philippines has now upgraded its luxury SUV for 2021 as well.

Priced at P 4.170 million (that’s a P 69,000 increase if you want to keep count), the 2021 Land Cruiser Prado finally gets the 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV engine which replaces the aging 3.0-liter 1KD-FTV. Even better, the Prado skips the first-generation 1GD engine altogether, and heads straight over to the second-generation engine. Like its application in the Fortuner and Hilux, it also gets 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. Toyota Motor Philippines has also dropped the manual version.

Mated to a 6-speed automatic, Toyota says the 2021 Land Cruiser Prado is faster to the century mark by three seconds compared to its predecessor (0-100 km/h in just 9.9 seconds), while top speed is pegged at 175 km/h. Despite being faster, average fuel consumption has been improved 4 percent.

Surprisingly, the 4.0-liter V6 gasoline version gets a reprieve for 2021. In fact, it continues largely unchanged with just a P 6,000 increase to P 3.369 million. For those wanting this engine, it gets you 275 horsepower and 381 Nm of torque.

Aside from the new engine, the 2021 Land Cruiser Prado gets minor exterior changes such as anew wheel design and taillights, as well as an improved interior with new gauges and infotainment system.

  2. HU should be Smartphone-ready/friendly na din like the updated ones in the international markets. I think this will be the last hurrah for the best-looking 4th gen J150 Prado. A new one is already in the horizon as we speak.

    1. 2.8 diesel is P 4.170M
      4.0 V6 gas is P 3.369M

    2. Id go for the v6 over the 2.8. I dont mind spending more for gas as it is cheaper by 700k. Ill be spending less than that for gas even if i reach the 200,000km usage.

    3. Sure but in the long run, the diesel prado will obviously still hold its resale value way better than the gas one. Don't forget that diesel fuel is also cheaper and that engine can achieve more km/l while being torquier at the same time, making it more viable for everyday use if you choose so. The main problem with the prado here is its high srp and disparity of prices between the two variants available. It doesn't qualify for jpepa exceptions or what. Peak prices for diesel could have been 3.5m at most and 3m for gas.

However come in 2022/23, hopefully toyota might be generous to give it huge discounts before they roll out the lc300-based prado but by that time, the j150 will be almost 15 years already and thus, obsolete like the outgoing bk pajero. Still, these specs are amazing for what it is (could have had the top-spec variant of int'l markets tho) but its srp is just a big turnoff although it helps in keeping the prado a rare sight in our roads, even moreso than the bigger lc200 which is why i like it more.

      Just my 2 cents.

  4. 4.17m for the diesel, why not just get the base LC200?

  5. According to its brochure, the prado is also equipped with kdss (kinetic dynamic suspension system). Can anyone confirm this? Tia.

  6. Under-speced and overpriced. That's the perfect storm to walk away from.

  7. Just grt the FJ ctuiser. Same underpinnings and 4.0 V6. Just without the extra seats which won't be used 99% of the time
