Check Out The Philippines' Most Affordable EV: The 2022 BYD Dolphin

After taking in reservations last December, STAR Corporation, the exclusive distributor of BYD vehicles in the Philippines has announced that first stocks of its all-electric hatchback, the Dolphin EV have arrived. Priced at P 1.798 million, it undercuts all other EVs be it from China, Korea, or Japan.

Locally, the BYD Dolphin is available with one engine variant and that makes 95 horsepower (70 kW) and 180 Nm of torque. Power is then stored in a 44.9-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery enough for a maximum cruising range of about 405 kilometers.

The Dolphin (or EA1) sits on BYD’s new e-Platform 3.0 which fully integrates the Blade batteries. This allows a 0 to 50 km/h time in 3.9 seconds, rapid charging capabilities (30 to 80 percent state of charge in 30 minutes), and a torsional rigidity double that of other combustion-engine offerings. Couple this with its long wheelbase (2,700 mm) on a compact frame (4,070 mm in length) makes for a fun-to-drive urban runabout. Two colors are available: Gray with Orange Accents and Gray with Green Accents.

Features found in the BYD Dolphin include LED head- and taillights, heated outside rear view mirrors, a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, a 5-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, and an NFC-based mobile key.

The BYD Dolphin is available for viewing at the BYD Showroom at 1702 Dian Street corner Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue in Makati City. Interested parties may contact their hotline at +63 8533 8888 or +63 917 795 0168.

    1. Yes, this and the BYD Atto 3 small suv are coming to Australia.

    2. On a purely cost of ownership standpoint, its interesting to check the math on cost of owning a similarly spec'd combustion engined car vs this EV

    3. Worth re-visiting it. The Leaf already sees a ROI when it's priced at P 1.8M and that's with gas prices a few years ago. I've got a feeling this one will help you breakeven in, maybe, 5 years?

    4. Interesting. Assuming you breakeven in 5 years, now comes the subjective criteria - pros and cons of owning an chinese EV re range anxiety, lack of infra, branding, reliability and servicing concerns.

My bet, tech like Nissan's e-POWER will become more successful in the next 5 years or until the infra and govt incentives for full EV improve.

  2. What is the appropriate no. of years of EV warranty? Is 5 years just fine (ex. Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid), or should it be longer?

  4. BYD local distributor announced last December 2021 the price of this Dolphin at 1.598M. why now 1.798M? I'd better buy a Powered Turbo Diesel MITSUBISHI MONTERO that will last forever.

    1. And I am happy that I prefer the BYD Dolphin.

    2. The P 1.598M apparently refers to the 300-km range model which they opted not to bring in anymore. Instead, they brought in the 400-km range model which costs P 1.798M. It's funny, because the info we got also indicated P 1.598M, but we were told to correct it to reflect the new variant they brought in.

  5. They should have included flood wading capability given our local climate.

  6. For me, still prefer the combustion type Engines, with minimal cost of ownership. im not convinced with the EV Batteries will is very costly.

  7. Price is too high. Or maybe I should have said the tax is too high. This model sells for less than 15k USD - less than 20k USD in China. If the government really wants to push EV sales, should lower the tax on them. Otherwise, can't compete with contentional vehicles.

    1. Yep...and they are coming to Australia in December, 2022 with a predicted price of around A$35,000 which is approx. 1.3 million Philippine pesos. I cannot understand why they are more expensive in Philippines.
