The all-new 2022 Toyota Avanza officially starts its retail sales today. The entry-level 7-seater MPV gets massive changes from the top down.
“The Philippines loves commercial vehicles or CVs. Through the years, MPVs have served as a practical choice for the day-to-day needs of Filipino families,” said TMP President Atsuhiro Okamoto during the vehicle launch.
The most obvious change is the platform. Eschewing its rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame platform, the all-new Avanza now shifts to a unibody, front-wheel drive platform co-developed with Toyota’s sister company, Daihatsu. The DNGA, as the platform is called, stretches the MPV’s wheelbase while also improving its overall packaging and efficiency.
Feature-wise, LED headlights and LED rear combination lamps are now standard across all model grades with the 1.3 E and 1.5 G both getting front fog lamps and power folding side view mirrors with an auto retracting function as well. Inside, all model grades get fabric seats with a two-tone black/brown color combination as well as a touchscreen display audio system sized either 6.75- or 8 inches.

Despite the platform shift, Toyota has opted to carryover the powertrains. This means that the Avanza is available in both 1.3-liter (1NR-VE) and 1.5-liter (2NR-VE) flavors. The now transverse-mounted engines make 98 horsepower and 122 Nm of torque or 106 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque. This is connected to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT.
While the nameplate isn’t known for packaging efficiency, the 2022 Avanza aims to change that. Standard across the range is what Toyota calls “Long Sofa Mode.” This seating allows either the first-row seats to fold back to meet the second-row, or the second-row seats to fold forward creating a foot rest for those in the third-row.
Feature-wise, LED headlights and LED rear combination lamps are now standard across all model grades with the 1.3 E and 1.5 G both getting front fog lamps and power folding side view mirrors with an auto retracting function as well. Inside, all model grades get fabric seats with a two-tone black/brown color combination as well as a touchscreen display audio system sized either 6.75- or 8 inches.
All models get dual SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, and vehicle stability control, but the 1.5 G adds four more airbags and blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert. All grades from the E upward also gets standard rear parking sensors with reverse camera.

DeleteJust my view...The TOTL G grade Avanza today is 1.039M. TOTL Rush G Grade is 1.1M. If TMP adds Veloz, it may probably be at 1.059M+ or slightly above Avanza G. Price diff will be around 0.61M or less vs Rush same grade. With the gap so low, demand for Veloz won't be able to justify its existence. Also TOTL Raize G is at 1.031M. Though we can argue that Raize is "just" 5 seater vs 7 of Avanza. PH is a SUV market so any MPV can easily be overshadowed if there are close choices.

DeleteIt used to be that Rush was the "SUVfied" version of the Avanza, just like: Mobilio (rip) -> BR-V, Ertiga -> XL7, Xpander -> Xpander Cross so Avanza -> Rush. However, it seems like the new Toyota Veloz occupies what the Rush was supposed to be. The Rush is now in this awkward spot where it is basically the old prehistoric Avanza competing against the fresh all-new Avanza. If someone for some reason likes the previous generation Avanza more than the new one, then that may be why they could go for the Rush. Otherwise, the Rush is significantly behind in terms of refinement not just compared to the all-new Avanza/Veloz, but against all its competitors.

TMP will gonna still manufacture cars here... If Toyota of Japan invests will us we might have Engine Block, Engines, Body and Painting, and also Production of Knockdown Kits locally. Toyota Philippines will unlikely close the factory since the Vios and Innova Production is still popular and doing well.
DeleteThe Avanza is a very great car, has a rubberbanding eCVT and VVTi engine, but the newly-launched Geely Emgrand (yes, only NA engine, and yes, it's not a Tayota) is still a compelling buy. Built on the same platform as the splendid Coolray, plus luxury cabin materials and tech at a very affordable price, the Emgrand challenges both MPVs & subcompact crossovers. Good job Geely.
