The Ferrari 296 GTS Is The Brand's First V6-Powered Targa In 60 Years

Ferrari is launching its first V6-powered top-down model since the Dino in the late 1960s with the new 296 GTS. It also happens to be a plug-in hybrid as well.

An offshoot of the 296 GTB launched in 2021, the rear-wheel drive two-seater 296 GTS is powered by a combination of a turbocharged V6 engine making 663 horsepower and an electric motor delivering a further 167 horsepower. Combined, it makes a class-leading figure of 830 horsepower. Moreover, thanks to a 7.45 kWh battery, the 296 GTB has an all-electric range of around 25 kilometers.

The 296 GTS’s name is derived from its engine displacement (2.9 liters) and the number of cylinders (6). The GTS acronym, meanwhile stands for Gran Turismo Spider.

Naturally, the biggest difference with the 296 GTS is its automatic targa top which takes 14 seconds to retract or deploy. The intricate roof dance can be done at speeds of up 45 km/h. With the roof up, the silhouette is nearly identical to the coupe. Moreover, the retractable top system is designed with performance and efficiency in mind. The two-piece roof, for example, maintains the coupe’s heat management properties—important in a mid-engined sportscar.

For those who want a more hardcore experience, Ferrari is also offering its new 296 GTS with the Assetto Fiorano package. Not only does it come with weight-saving features and aero modifications, but the suspension has been optimized for track use as well.

Pricing and delivery dates for the 296 GTB have not been announced. However, with the Philippines’ Ferrari distributorship, Motostrada not anymore recognized by the Italian sportscar maker, would-be customers can’t officially order one yet. It remains to be seen which company will take over the distributorship.
