Ferrari Unveils First-Ever V6 Road Car: The 296 GTB

Ferrari is finally embracing electrification in a big way with the 296 GTB—a 830-horsepower mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sportscar that also happens to feature a plug-in hybrid system.

Positioned between the brand’s 8- and 12-cylinder offerings, the 296 GTB is Ferrari’s first 6-cylinder road car. It makes a 663-horsepower V6 coupled with a 167-horsepower electric motor. The 830-horsepower road car is also a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) capable of traveling up to 25 kilometers (at speeds up to 135 km/h) in pure electric mode (eDrive mode). Yet, being the first member in the Ferrari range to feature the F163 engine (nicknamed the “piccolo V12” or little V12), it promises the same shrill sound associated with the Italian supercar brand.

The 296 GTB also features an 8-speed dual clutch automatic sourced from the SF90 Stradale and Ferrari Roma, and an automotive-first 6-way Chassis Dynamics Sensor that estimates vehicle grip more accurately.

The compact engine and unique requirements for both turbo and battery cooling, requires unique aero solutions for the 296 GTB. Yet, in typical Ferrari design, the end result is something that blends performance-oriented elements with clean, elegant lines. One of its most recognizable elements is a windshield that wraps around to the side windows. Breaking from tradition though, the tail adopts a “discontinuity” between the roof and rear engine cover. And speaking about the rear, it also gets an active rear spoiler that’s seamlessly integrated into the bumper design.

Inside, the cockpit has an entirely digital interface.

And for owners who’d like something even more hardcore, Ferrari is offering the 296 GTB with the Assetto Fiorano package (the gray with yellow highlights in these photos). This package includes racing-derived suspension, a high-downforce package, a lightweight Lexan rear windshield, and more carbon fiber bits in the interior. Overall, it saves around 12 kilograms of weight (an additional 15 kilograms with the Lexan rear glass).

The 2022 Ferrari 296 GTB is now ready for orders through Ferrari’s exclusive Philippine distributor, Motostrada. Their showroom is located on 32nd corner 4th Street, Crescent Park West, BGC. Telephone number is +63 2 8801 7777.
