Nissan Is Looking To China To Boost Its Competitiveness

Nissan is looking to China to boost its global competitiveness, particularly in the realm of electrified vehicles.

In a report by Automotive News, Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa says the Japanese carmaker is looking to potentially export Chinese-developed electrified models to help them with emissions compliance and margin goals.

One example is the Frontier Pro—a plug-in hybrid pickup truck co-developed with Dongfeng. Espinosa says they are considering to export it more markets to help broaden their electrified commercial and lifestyle vehicle portfolio.

Moreover, Nissan is looking to augment its e-Power serial hybrid with something it should have offered in the first place: the ability to plug.

Espinosa says engineers are looking to add a plug-in hybrid derivative of the e-Power system that could potentially transform it into a Range Extended Electric Vehicle or REEV.

Essentially, the e-Power’s serial hybrid technology is already a REEV in that the small gasoline engine only acts as a generator to recharge the battery while driving. It does not drive the wheels directly.

To complete the e-Power’s REEV transformation, Nissan would need to fit a larger battery and the ability to plug in.

It must be noted that in China, Nissan is already using REEV technology in its recently launched NX8 crossover. This one, however, isn’t engineered by the Japanese carmaker, but by Chinese market partner, Dongfeng which uses CATL LFP batteries.
