Kia Launches Sexier, Edgier Sportage for the Philippines (w/ Brochure)

Photos by Ulysses Ang and Kia Press
Exclusive Kia distributor in the Philippines, Columbian Autocar Corporation (CAC) is readying itself for a busy 2016 by launching their opening salvo of the year: the all-new Sportage. The fourth-generation compact crossover to wear the nameplate, the 2016 Sportage is bold, refined, and dynamic. Powered by one of the most powerful engines in its class (and it’s a diesel), it’s sure to win the hearts of both enthusiasts and practical-minded owners alike.

Initially offered solely with a diesel engine, the all-new Sportage is powered by a Euro-4 emissions compliant R 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine boasting 185 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 402 Nm of torque at 2,750 rpm. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission (with paddle shifters on the GT Line), it rockets this compact crossover to 100 km/h in just 8.9 seconds.

Handling duty is assigned to the all-around independent suspension (MacPherson Struts in front, Multi-links at the back) with the GT Line getting the added benefit of high-performance dampers. Bigger brakes all around (305 mm versus 300 mm in front, 302 mm versus 262 mm) also equate to surefooted stopping power. The Sportage’s shoe size has also grown to handle all the power with the EX models receiving 225/55R18’s while the GT Line receiving 245/45R19’s.

Recognized worldwide for its cutting-edge design (it has received the prestigious 2016 Red Dot Award for product design), the all-new Sportage is described as: sporty, energetic, and dramatic. Taking its inspiration from fighter jets, it has the newest interpretation of the corporate tiger-nose grille. For the first time ever, the headlights and grille elements have been separated creating a wider, more imposing appearance despite similar widths as the outgoing model. Sporting a low 0.33 co-efficient of drag, the sleek Sportage is designed with high aerodynamic efficiency in mind.

Joining the EX model range is the new GT Line that adds even more design flair. Apart from the larger alloy wheels, the Sportage GT Line gets a unique grille, aluminum skid plate, ice-cube LED front fog lamps, LED daytime running lights, more chrome garnishing, metal-effect rear underbody, and dual exhaust tips.

Inside, the emphasis is to deliver a more driver-centric cockpit with a higher percentage of soft-touch materials. The focus is a clearly-defined center console with a new vertical design that emphasizes width giving an impression of space and sportiness. The 2016 Sportage also boasts of more legroom thanks to a longer wheelbase while the redesigned cabin makes for improved head and shoulder room. The rear seats in particular features increased reclining ability pitching as much as 37 degrees compared to the outgoing model’s 28. The luggage room is also bigger: 503 liters versus 465 liters.

Like its unique exterior treatment, the Sportage GT Line gets unique differentiators inside like the D-shaped leather steering wheel, high-quality piano black fascia, aluminum alloy pedals, and a panoramic sunroof. The GT Line also gets powered seats for both the driver and passenger.

In terms of safety, dual SRS airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, and rear parking sensors are standard. The GT Line adds 4 more airbags (total 6), electronic stability control will hill descent and hill hold assist functions, and an engine immobilizer system.

The all-new Kia Sportage is available in three variants: the EX 2WD (P 1,445,000), EX AWD (P 1,595,000), and GT-Line AWD (P 1,795,000) and in six colors: Fiery Red, Mercury Blue, Patina Gold, Cherry Black, Sparkling Silver, and Snow White. Like all Kia models, it’s covered by a 5-year/160,000-kilometer bumper-to-bumper warranty backed up with a 24/7 free roadside assistance service.

  1. Too heavy and overpriced based on specs. The Mazda CX5 is still a better buy.

  2. Wtf is wrong with Kia! This should only be in the 1m range!

  3. It doesnt look like a fighter jet inspired to me. The interior is blah at the most. The exterior is forgivable- Panamera cues. The top range price is a lot better than the top range rav4 and takes the cake for me.

    1. considering the two most overpriced crossovers are the rav4 and the new tucson which is crossing the 2 million peso mark, this totl sportage price is a steal lol.

    2. Is it? You may have missed the forester xt and the cx5

  4. That price! NO WAY! Id rather buy CX5. I was expecting korean car prices to down with KFTA agreement but what is this?

    1. Wait for the gas and LX variants if you want a cheaper Sportage.

    2. The interior is bad enough and you want to downgrade it even further? No thanks, I'm gonna stick to my Mazda 3 Speed.

  5. It will smoke the CX5 with its 400nm of torque. Just get the base Sportage and it doesn't seem pricey compared to other soft roaders

    1. It's a diesel that's why it has more torque than the gasoline CX-5, but the CX-5 is significantly lighter, and it's made in Japan. The interior is also not worth it for the price. The exterior is fine though, but kinda odd ,somewhat Juke like. It is also ranked low in 1st world country reviewers, in which the Mazda CX5 is the top pick in the segment.

    2. Maybe its because the diesel is not available in the US. UK reviews where the diesel like this is available rank this Sportage higher than the CX-5. Weight difference will not matter when it almost doubles the torque of its competitor

  6. What in the hell is wrong with korean manufacturers ghese days? They think they can price their cars like japanese. The nerve!!!!!!

    1. At 1.4 million php, and it doesn't have leather seats, LCD unit, and keyless entry, push start button lol. The only gem here is the engine.

    2. and no bluetooth at P1.4 million base price.... ganyan talaga CAC tinitipid mga base variant.. yung kia soul nga rin ang pangit ng interior kasi tinitipid din...

    3. Add to that, kia is one of the worst when it comes to aftersales services.

    4. The engine is a carryover from the last generations, shared with tucson.

  8. it fairness to KIA, it has been proven that KIAs are faster in speed than HYUNDAIs even if they use the same engine in their respective line ups. It was secretly revealed that the tuning / mapping of KIAs are tuned for faster runs than hyundais. example - the sorrento is faster than a sta.fe , the rio (gas) is faster than the accent.. etc. even if they are using the same engine. I personally trashed a kia rio and an accent, and the Rio rocks in terms of speed.

    1. Oh.. So that's why Kia's engine are all so fucking thirsty! Because they were tuned to be faster. Nice job kia, surely we can use the speed in traffic. Who needs fuel right?

      Delete
    2. at least Kias are faster. Nice job kia. Fuel is cheap. diesel.

      Delete
    3. Faster but not by much. But their engines consume fuel like a depressed middle-aged drunkard on a Friday night.

  9. The interior looks very nice.
The exterior though, looks like a mudskipper.
    Quite polarizing.

  10. The thing looks embarassing to drive. Almost as embarrassing as driving an old innova.

    1. Wow, so pangit naman that innova compared to this Sportage.

  11. Mga tanga din talaga tao no. Ano ba akala nyo buong pilipinas ang metro manila? May mga lugar na hindi trapik. May paglalagyan ang mabilis na kotse sa pinas. Be it in the suburbs, in the track, or outside the metro. So stfu about aanhin mo ang performance sa trapik. You sound ignorant and ridiculous

    1. Relax lang. Wag masyadong high blood. Alam mo kung gusto mo ng mabilis na sasakyan, maghanap ka ng sportscar hindi sa crossover o kahit ano pa na pang pamilya na sasakyan.

      Delete
    2. ^Agree. If you're jabbering about speed all the time, opt for a V6 Ford Mustang or a similar sports car, not a crossover. Still, more engine punch would be welcomed.

  12. Does it have paddle-shifters?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes. Look at the photos. Dumbarse.

      Delete
    2. No paddle-shifters on the actual units. And it says shiftronic in the brochure.

      Delete
    3. GT-Line has paddle shifters. All models though come with a manual shift override, but only the GT-Line gets the paddles.

    4. Sir, may rear cam ba this?

  13. For the price of the GT-Line AWD, the Forester XT or the Hyundai Santa Fe 2WD will be a better buy.

    ReplyDelete
  14. ^Not sure how refine the drive is in terms of NVH, but the "high re-sale value" peeps could argue that the MUX is a better buy than this Korean car...

  15. I don't like the front look. Looks like a big rio. lol, the old one was already a masterpiece imo.

  17. I love the All-new Fortuner 4x4, but pricey for a 2.1M deal. My 2nd option is Ford Everest 3.2L, a little bit cheaper for a 1.9 deal 4x4 titanium, but is a gas guzzler. My 3rd choice is Honda CR-V or KIA sportage. Which do you prefer??? PLEASE HELP!!!

    1. Do you honestly like the way that Crv looks? Which one do you find more guapo? If based on looks, I'd go for the Kia Sportage.

  19. Kia Sportage is a great buy. Their line of cars has been improving a lot lately. To say and to repeat that Japanese cars are still better is getting old. Why not just accept the fact that Kia has been redeeming itself over the past years and move on,rather than being all knowing about what's what. If you don't like the price, buy its most basic gasoline range then customize it yourself. That way you'll see where your money goes to and focus on parts that you feel the need to customize the most.

  20. I love the new ad placement for the new kia sportage. I'm totally sold with its futuristic take.
