The Korean automaker, which is under a court-led rehabilitation, showed off sketches of an upcoming “semi-mid-sized SUV” called the Torres. Reflecting the brand’s new design philosophy—Powered by Toughness—it brings back SsangYong’s distinctive and authentic SUV characteristics.

The name Torres was inspired by the spectacular views of Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia. The park was designated a World Biosphere Reserve status by UNESCO in 1978 and is well known for its magnificent mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers. The name is designed to embody a sense of adventure, challenge, and escapism.

The production SUV, slated to roll off the production line sometime this year, will have a tough, yet contemporary-styled exterior. The front of the Torres features a vertical radiator-style grille giving the sense of a rugged appearance, while the rear tailgate continues this theme with a classic off-road appearance, emphasizing the freedom to explore. The sketches also reveal what look to be Land Rover Defender-style pillar-mounted storage boxes.

The Torres will slot between the Korando and the Rexton in terms of size. This, SsangYong hopes, will create an additional segment in the market and will open up new opportunities for the brand.

The combustion engine version, codenamed J100 will be joined by an all-electric version named the U100 towards the end of 2023.
