GAC Group Shows Off Wild-Looking Barchetta Show Car

Celebrating the inauguration of its European R&D Center in Milan, Italy, the GAC Group showed off an innovative and avant-garde showcase dubbed the Barchetta.

“We mixed inspiration from Italian car design from the 70s and styling cues from the GAC Time concept. It is the combination of modern design influences and high-tech electric technology of GAC, a demonstration of the agility of fully digital studio process by doing a full-size show car within 2 months,” said Stéphane Janin, design director of GAC Advanced Design Milan.

The GAC Barchetta showed the agility of the Milan-based team, particularly when it comes to efficiency and problem solving.

Starting with an iconic Italian type of vehicle—a two-seater with no roof or windshield, the team worked with three main principles: an ultra-flat, compact chassis that contained the high-voltage battery for its electric powertrain; a super lightweight aluminum body with a design that’s distinctive yet simple; and a minimalist interior.

“Our goal is to create design languages and design concepts that reflects GAC new green-tech era by mixing car culture inspiration and advanced new design thinking.

We will try to create and display innovative projects every year during the design week and hope it could help growing brand awareness in Europe and prepare AION launch here when needed,” continued Janin.

“Design is one of the most important values for the GAC Group and, in today’s market, a key decision factor for customers. With the reveal of Barchetta concept, we are confident that this center will enable the meeting of creative resources and the development of cutting-edge ideas between our country, Italy, and the rest of the world”. said Zhang Fan, General Manager of GAC R&D Center Europe.
