Porsche To Launch 911 Dakar: A Sportscar For The Off-Road

Porsche will unveil a special variant of its iconic 911: the 911 Dakar at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It will be the first two-door sportscar to offer outstanding off-road capabilities.

The model name is a nod to the first overall victory by Porsche in the Paris-Dakar rally. The breakthrough triumph came in 1984 in a modified Porsche 911 which had been fitted with an all-wheel-drive system for the first time.

In testing the 911 Dakar, the development engineers didn’t only restrict themselves to intensive use of the off-road proving grounds in Weissach, Germany. In fact, the development team tested the 911 Dakar around the world under extreme conditions to the tune of more than half a million kilometers, including more than 10,000 kilometers off-road.

The regimen included rally stages in France where the 911 Dakar was fine-tuned for loose gravel as well as repeated jumps. It was also tested over compacted snow in Sweden as well as Dubai and Morocco, where it climbed over 50-meter sand dunes in 45-degree heat.

According to Porsche, the 911 Dakar will combine low weight, short wheelbase, and a higher ground clearance for an exhilarating driving experience.
