Mazda CX-8 Gains New Face, More Tech For 2023

Just five months after the refreshed CX-8 arrived in ASEAN (and just two months since its Philippine market reveal at PIMS), Mazda has updated its three-row SUV yet again.

The 2023 Mazda CX-8 represents the model’s first major update, and for that it has received a comprehensive styling refresh and a suite of new technological features.

Outside, it gains an updated design first seen in the CX-5. Changes at the front include a new grille with a block mesh pattern, headlights, and bumper. At the back, the tailgate has been updated to blend with the revised taillight cluster. New wheel patterns and the availability of Mazda’s latest color, Rhodium White, cap off the exterior changes.

For its home market of Japan, the CX-8 gains three appearance packages—Grand Journey, Sport, and Exclusive. The Sport is similar to the Philippine market CX-9 Black Edition in that it gets black painted exterior elements and wheels, while the Exclusive is akin to the CX-5 Turbo and its body-colored bumpers, wheel arches, and enlarged muffler tips. The Grand Journey, meanwhile, is a more rugged take on the three-row SUV.

Inside, the 2023 CX-8 gains more technology. This starts with a new razor-sharp 7-inch digital instrument display coupled with a 10.25-inch infotainment display equipped with the latest Mazda Connect system. It also gains wireless Apple CarPlay (Android Auto is still wired) and added USB Type C ports. For better comfort, the front seats have been optimized for better pelvic and back support, while for added convenience, the CX-8 now has a remote window control system which allows the windows to be opened and closed via the key fob.

In terms of performance, the new CX-8 retains its three powertrains—the normally-aspirated 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G, the 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D, and the turbocharged 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G. These engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic. That said, it does benefit from better ride and handling thanks to revised springs and dampers. Furthermore, the Mazda Intelligent Drive Select now adds a third mode: “Off-Road” which joins the current “Normal” and “Sport” modes.

Safety-wise, the CX-8 improves its adaptive LED headlights which now house 20 LED arrays (up from 12) for improved nighttime visibility. Its adaptive cruise control also adds Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS) enabling it to work starting from a standstill, while also offering self-steering support.

The 2023 Mazda CX-8 goes on sale in its home market this December with its first export market, Australia, getting it by March 2023.
