How’s this for a plot twist: EV fast chargers can be more harmful to your health than a gasoline station. This is according to a report coming from Bloomberg.
Citing research done by the University of California, Los Angeles’ Fielding School of Public Health, EV fast chargers are an “overlooked source of air pollution” and one that can be dangerous to your health.
The emissions are likely tied to the fans used in direct current fast chargers’ power cabinets. While they help keep equipment cool, the recent study indicates they likely have the unintended side effect of kicking up particles from tires, brakes, and dust into the air.
Researchers took air quality measurements at 50 direct current (DC) fast charging stations in Los Angeles County, California. They found that the average concentration of fine particulate matter in the air at the charging sites was 15.2 micrograms per cubic meter, slightly higher than what researchers found at gas stations and significantly higher than in other urban locations such as parks.
Nearly half of the charging sites had daily fine particulate matter emissions that exceeded the World Health Organization’s air quality guidelines. Of note, the study focused on non-exhaust emissions and therefore did not measure many types of pollution related to gasoline-powered cars.
Fueling stations and gas-powered cars, by far, post a more potent health risk because of their emissions and the nature of gasoline or diesel itself as a fuel. In fact, fueling stations are major sources of volatile organic compounds, a category of chemicals that includes the carcinogen benzene, while internal combustion vehicles produce smog-forming pollutants.
Nonetheless, the study is a call to EV charging companies to include filtration in charging cabinets to mitigate pollution or enforce a minimum height for the air intake and exhaust to limit the ingress of dust, debris, and water. They can also avoid putting the chargers near places like schools and residential areas.
In the Philippines, the DOE mandates that DC fast chargers be installed outdoors with ample ventilation. Although this is to mitigate any potential fire risk, they can now add health to its list of reasons as well.

in california almost all things are considered pollutants by woke environmentalist. They even want to charged pollutants tax to the cows burp
ReplyDeleteThe carcinogen benzene in the form of hexane is also present in the vegetable oils ( seed oil) people use to cook and fry their foods.
ReplyDeleteTake that bloomberg!.
So the cooling fans kick up dirt and dust from the ground and the surrounding cars which congregate to charge and aren't generated from the chargers themselves. This seems like such a specific minor issue (that the article does say is fixable). I'd bet that conducting the same air tests beside highways would yield similar results because of speeding cars also kicking up particles and dust from the ground.
ReplyDeletejust stay inside the car when charging, thats the point of EV.
ReplyDeleteWhat if the EV explodes?
DeleteThis is just plain silly.
ReplyDeleteFact: Gas Fumes is much better to breathe
ReplyDeleteGetting into a fight with someone hogging the charger is also a health risk.
ReplyDeleteI love this woke shift. We are all screwed
ReplyDeleteSo what's the point of BEVs? Seems like it's just making the auto industry worse. It's killing car enthusiasts for driving pure and manual cars as well as those V6 V8 V10 V12 V16 engines. Those are classic and for the drivers.
