Toyota Launches All-New 9th Generation Hilux With More Power, Better Efficiency

Toyota has unveiled the all-new 9th generation Hilux—marking the next evolution of the brand’s long standing global pickup nameplate. Built on the foundations of QDR—Quality, Durability, and Reliability, the Hilux now fuses toughness with a bold, future-focused design language and a more potent powerplant.

Designed to meet the diverse requirements of customers around the world, the new Hilux emphasizes Toyota’s multi-pathway approach by offering both internal combustion engine (ICE) and battery electric (BEV) variants from the get-go. The all-new Hilux is scheduled to go on sale in Thailand this November 10 (December 10 for the BEV) and starting in fiscal year 2026 (April 1, 2026 onwards) for global markets, including the Philippines.

The all-new Hilux comes with a “Tough and Agile” design concept. The “Cyber Sumo” front-end is so-named for the sumo wrestler’s pre-combat Shikiri Stance. This emphasizes the Hilux’s three core characteristics: Stable, Strong, and Steady. The slimmed down grille with the two-volume architecture make it look distinctive along pickup trucks, while it drops the Toyota “T” logo for the words, “TOYOTA” spelled out both on the front and the back.

Meanwhile, inside, it uses the “Robust Simplicity” approach, doubling down on practical usefulness without sacrificing modernity. The design is meant to be ergonomic yet filled with new levels of technology with an electronic parking brake with auto hold, wireless charger, large digital instrument cluster (up to 12.3-inch) and large free-standing infotainment touchscreen (up to 12.3-inch). USB Type C chargers are found front and back, and dual zone climate control with rear vents is an available feature.

The 2026 Hilux was developed through a close partnership between engineering teams in Thailand and Australia, reflecting a shared commitment to create vehicles that combines deep regional insight with advanced design capability.

Underneath the hood, the Hilux comes standard with an improvement version of the 2.8-liter GD engine. The “Super Power” engine provides both high power (204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque) and improved fuel efficiency—up to 5.8 percent more efficient than the current 2.4-liter turbo diesel and 7.5 percent more efficient than the current 2.8-liter thanks in part to an idle start-stop feature.

Together with the revamped powertrain, the all-new Hilux comes with electric power steering (EPS) and four wheel disc brakes, and together with the enhanced platform with higher body rigidity and retuned suspension, makes for a more confident and comfortable drive. It continues with a low-range four-wheel drive system with rear locking differentials, but adds a new Multi-Terrain Select that unlocks five different drive modes for surefootedness across any surface.

Alongside the diesel-powered Hilux, a new battery electric version has also been introduced. This BEV variant, officially called the “Hilux Travo-e” in Thailand (Hilux EV elsewhere) becomes the brand’s first commercially available body-on-frame BEV. The Hilux EV delivers instant torque and quiet performance with zero tailpipe emissions while maintain the core capabilities known of the model such as off-road articulation (500 mm), water wading (700 mm), towing (2,000 kilograms) and payload capacity (715 kilograms). The dual motor configuration makes 196 horsepower in total and thanks to a 52.9-kWh battery it can go up to 315 kilometers on a single charge. A Diamond Guard offers robust underbody protection for the battery giving peace of mind, even during off-road driving.

Both the Hilux and the Hilux EV come with a next-generation infotainment system with smartphone integration and connected services that enhance the ownership experience throughout its lifecycle. It also has Panoramic View Monitor and Multi-Terrain Monitor for superior visibility and control in all situations, and Toyota Safety Sense 3 with enhanced pre-collision and lane-keeping functions.

The all-new Hilux will be sold alongside the current model, where it will carry on as a fleet-oriented model. Prices for the 9th-generation Hilux start at 789,000 Thai Baht (P 1.433 million) to 1,366,000 Thai Baht (P 2.48 million). These are prices are close to the current-generation Hilux. The Hilux EV, meanwhile, is priced at 1,491,000 Thai Baht (P 2,709,000).

As one of Toyota’s most important models globally (in Asia most especially), the all-new Hilux becomes an enduring symbol of trust, toughness, and long-term value.

    2. Exactly the same overall dimensions, especially the inside and bed, it's based on the old platform.

  2. Well uhh... It certainly looks like a pick up

  3. I'm assuming the Overland is the equivalent to the Conquest. However, I find it strange that the new Hilux doesn't seem to have the special wide track width of the current Conquest 4x4 and GR-S.

  4. Price increase should be minimal if it is using the same platform, hopefully.

  5. Interior is the biggest upgrade of this Hilux. Finally, the buttons look so much more organized instead of being haphazardly littered all over the cabin. The design looks nice for a pickup as well, though once I noticed the dash not really lining up with the center console, I have never been able to unsee it lol. Sadly, it probably still will be the tightest interior in its class because of the old platform.

  9. The looks good but it's kinda odd that the transmission placement looks like it's a converted LHD vehicle.

  10. Toyota knows what their customers want. Their customers are not the type that reads through vehicle press releases or read reviews on driving dynamics or watch comparison videos. They just want what pickup truck the Toyota showroom offers for its "Toyota-ness" (dealership network, maintenance, reliability, the usual script)

    1. In the Philippines that may apply but that is not exactly true in other markets.

In India, Toyota is dwarfed by Suzuki and people actually avoid Toyota BECAUSE they don't have many service centers there.

In Australia Toyota is mostly well regarded but their dealerships over there have a mixed reputation. So their position is not 100% solid.

Toyota has a winning formula but that doesn't mean that there is no upset potential for their competitors. Complacency has killed many juggernauts that people thought were invincible.

    2. Toyota isn't even that popular in Europe as they don't like the boring, bland and expensive vehicles of Toyota.
In Pakistan and Nepal they're behind Suzuki while in Vietnam they're behind Vinfast,Mitsubishi and Hyundai.
Toyota India tried to sell the previous generation Vios/Yaris Sedan there but it flopped badly as it was beaten by the Hyundai Accent and Honda City.

  13. Not sure if other Hilux fans (I'm a current-gen owner myself) would agree, but this new truck seems underwhelming and somewhat perfunctory. To put that impression in perspective, the current truck is a decade old (launched for 2015 model year). We are made to believe manufacturers work on the next generation as soon as the last one is launched. So what did Toyota work on in the past 10 years? Secondly, the Hilux is a national bestseller in many countries around the world. Is Toyota telling us this (subject of the article) is their follow-up to the wildly popular current Hilux? If the current platform was to be kept, how hard was it to move the rear wheels back a few centimeters to address the loudest complaint on passenger space? They could have addressed that, if nothing else.
