Honda's Already At Work On The Next-Generation Civic's Platform

Honda is battling weight to make its upcoming electrified vehicles more fun to drive. As the carmaker pushes more of its hybrid electric and battery electric powertrains, it also understands that mass is a key enemy of agility.

For its next-generation hybrid electric vehicles, which will debut starting from 2027 onwards, Honda is showing off a brand-new platform that combines various innovations. Using new engineering design methods, the carmaker says its new HEV platform is lighter by 90 kilograms compared to the current one.

More than just simple weight reduction, Honda has found a way to directly influence vehicle dynamics by optimizing the body rigidity. For example, as the body flexes during cornering, the load put on each tire is controlled. This improves the overall stability and roadholding.

On top of that, the handling software in this next-generation hybrids adds a Motion Management System that mitigates pitching. This is done by adjusting the deceleration load on the front tires in accordance with the steering input, increasing the available grip. It’s a system already currently in place in the Accord and Prelude, but will be further developed.

Production-wise, the new platform will have a high level of parts commonality by separating commonized modules such as the engine room and rear underbody. Honda says they be able to use more than 60 percent common parts across all models using this platform helping them speed up product development. This will also help them develop a more diverse and distinctive model range, while keeping their costs lower.

One of the first models to receive this next-generation HEV platform is the all-new Civic. At a Honda Automotive Technology Workshop, the carmaker revealed what they officially call the Next Generation Hybrid Study. Offhand, engineers at the test revealed it to be a test mule for the 12th generation Civic.

As the world shifts towards an electrified future—be it through hybrid or pure electric—Honda believes that “joy of driving” is its unique value proposition. Thus, it’s imperative to offer this in every vehicle they offer, regardless of powertrain.

  2. Next generation hybrid to be launched on 2027? Seriously? Where are the BEVs and the solid state batteries?

    1. The Japanese are/were late to commit to heavy electrification. That fact is already old news.
