After a brief pause of on-track racing brought on by the national energy crisis, the Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup (TGR Philippine Cup) is ready to hit the Clark International Speedway once again, but with a slight twist.
To recall, the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) paused all of its sanctioned motorsports activities last March due to the Philippine government declaring a national emergency brought on by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. With the TGR Philippine Cup being an AAP-sanctioned event, Toyota Motor Philippines had to abide by the AAP’s decision.
Although Malacañang has yet to lift the state of national emergency (if they don’t, it’s automatically in place for a year) and fuel prices now reaching pre-energy crisis levels, AAP has re-opened certain racing activities, but using alternative fuels use as ethanol and biodiesel.
For Toyota Motor Philippines, the upcoming Clark leg of the TGR Philippine Cup this July 11 will be treated as a “rolling laboratory,” to explore the usage of ethanol-blended fuels on its Vios OMR and bio-diesels for its Tamaraw OMR. This is also in line with Toyota Gazoo Racing’s vision of using motorsports as a testing ground to building ever-better cars.
With the return of the TGR Philippine Cup to the race track, it marks the second major motorsports to return from a hiatus. During the first leg of the Mazda Fan Festa, Mazda Philippines announced that its MSCC Miata Spec Series and Miata Cup will also return to the Clark International Speedway on Saturday, July 18.
