The Kia Sonet smashed itself to a one-star Adult Occupancy Protection score at the Global New Car Assessment Program. It also scored three stars in Child Occupant Protection as well.
The Sonet’s score was dragged down due to its lack of side impact airbags, mimicking the spec available in the Philippines. In addition, the driver’s and front passenger’s knees only showed “marginal” protection in a frontal crash as “they can impact with dangerous structures behind the fascia.” The footwell area was also rated as “unstable” as is the bodyshell itself.
It’s a shame because the rest of the Sonet performed well during the crash test. It offers “good” protection to the driver’s and front passenger’s head. “Adequate” protection to the driver’s chest and “good” protection for the front passenger’s chest. The driver’s left tibia also showed “good” protection, while the driver’s right tibia and passenger’s tibias showed “adequate” protection.
When it comes to Child Occupancy Protection, the Sonet offered full protection during its front impact test as does during the side impact test. It was docked points, however, for not having three-point seatbelts in all seating positions.
The Kia Sonet scored 21.29 out of 34 in Adult Occupancy Protection and 28.57 out of 49 in Child Occupancy Protection.
If there’s a fine print to all of this, the Sonet tested by Global NCAP is made in India for the South Asia and African markets. The Philippines, however, sources its Sonet from China which wasn’t tested under the C-NCAP.
