Review: 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L EyeSight

Everyone grows old, it’s inevitable; the difference lies in how people react to it—some resist the change, while others embrace it. Now on its fifth-generation model, the 2019 Subaru Forester lies squarely in the latter. Gone are the days of him being free-spirited and a slightly quirky young gun; this one takes his vitamins every morning and a chamomile tea every night, especially if he’s had too much to eat. Gone are the days of late-night raves, now he has to be at bed by 9 PM. In short, the Forester’s now hit the midlife, and he’s fully embraced it. He’s the Tito of Compact SUVs, and he doesn’t care.

Want A Better Drive? Skip the Forester and Get the Subaru XV Instead

I’ll let you in on a little secret: if you’re on the fence and can’t decide whether you should get the Subaru XV or the Forester, take my advice and go straight for the smaller, quirkier one. Sure, utility is a bit compromised here, but it more than makes up for it in other areas including better on-road dynamics.

Review: 2022 Subaru Forester 2.0-iS EyeSight

Boring. Bland. Dull. Those are just some of the adjectives thrown against the current “SK” Subaru Forester since its launch in 2019. Without a turbocharged variant, or any sense of quirky, oddball styling, it sits, for better or worse, right smack in the middle of the mainstream. It has become, Mr. Innocuous—neither offending nor impressing. Well, it seems Subaru’s heard its fans out loud, and the result is this: the 2022 Forester.

The 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-S EyeSight is More Mainstream Than Ever

With the same running gear as the mid-grade Subaru Forester 2.0i-L EyeSight, it’s sufficient enough to say that this high-trim model, the Forester 2.0i-S EyeSight drives the very same way. You can check out the more extensive review here, but if you want the gist, read on.

First Drive: 2016 Subaru Forester 2.0i-Premium

The Subaru Forester is being attacked from the most unlikely source: the mid-sized 7-seater SUV. Though this compact crossover has its segment down pat, the allure of having a larger SUV with seating for seven has affected sales somewhat. This is critical because it’s the biggest volume driver for the purveyor of the boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive. So what’s Subaru to do? Well, they’ve done the right thing: give the Forester a well-timed refresh to help it embrace a much more premium market position (without the premium price, of course).

Review: 2016 Subaru Forester XT

Three years is a long time in the automotive world. In the same amount of time when the typical car financing matures (or warranty expires), a once great product can get left behind or worse, be forgotten in the minds of would-be buyers and consumers. This is especially true for the compact crossover genre—a segment that’s seen about a dozen competitors, not even counting the mid-sized SUVs that have all popped up since then. Now, imagine if your company is reliant on such a product, accounting to more than 50 percent of sales in the process. Keeping a slight edge could very well determine survival. Imagine then the weight on the Subaru Forester’s shoulders.

Review: 2013 Subaru Forester XT

Photos by Ulysses Ang
The Forester is perhaps the most important product for Subaru. What was once an odd little all-wheel drive wagon on stilts has matured into a competitive crossover that accounts for about half of exclusive Philippine distributor, Motor Image Pilipinas’s total sales. With those numbers continuing to swell even in the third-generation (SH5)’s twilight hours, engineers and designers found themselves in the unenviable position of being asked to build up on the strengths of the outgoing model while trying to achieve better fuel efficiency, more useable space, and a more refined drive.
