Hyundai Is Now The World's Third Best-Selling Car Brand

The Korea Times reported that Hyundai Motor Group is now the world’s third-largest automaker by sales volume. For the first half of 2022, the group—composed of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis sold 3.3 million vehicles.

Placed first and second in terms of sales volume are Toyota with 5.1 million vehicles sold in that period, while the Volkswagen Group sold four million vehicles in that time. The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance followed behind Hyundai with 3.14 million vehicles and Stellantis with 3.01 million vehicles sold.

For comparison, the Hyundai Motor Group ranked fifth in sales volume in the first half of last year.

Production setbacks experienced by carmakers worldwide due to the shortage in semiconductor supply contributed to the rise in the global market by the Hyundai Motor Group, as it had recorded smaller decreases in sales – by 5.1 percent– than those sustained by other manufacturers in the first half of this year compared to the same time last year, the report cited experts as saying.

Carmakers which sustained drops in sales in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period last year included Toyota which was down by 6 percent, Volkswagen by 14 percent, Stellantis by 16 percent, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance by 17.3 percent and General Motors by 18.6 percent.

An increase in sales of the luxury Genesis brand and a strategy of entering the eco-friendly car market in its early stage also contributed to the rise of Hyundai’s global ranking, the report says.

  1. Are local Hyundai/Kia cars affected by that issue in the US where the engines catch fire, even with the engine OFF while parked overnight?

  3. Until now, Hyundai Ph and Kia Ph have not released any statement about this issue. To be sure, at this point, avoid buying Hyundai and Kia vehicles.
