This Is America's First-Ever All-Electric Pickup Fit For Police Duty

This is America’s first electric pickup truck purpose-built for police duty: the 2023 F-150 Lightning Pro Special Service Vehicle or SSV.

Blending qualities of the F-150 Lightning such as its sub-four-second 0 to 100 km/h time, the high-tech electric platform, and real-time software updates, the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV is designed to handle police needs outside of pursuit situations, such as assisting at an accident or crime scene or giving departments the ability to tow a boat or trailer.

The F-150 Lightning Pro SSV comes with features such as heavy-duty cloth seats with reduced bolsters to help holstered officers enter and exit the vehicle more easily; built-in steel intrusion plates in the front seatbacks; an upfit-friendly reinforced instrument panel top tray for easy mounting of police equipment; and an easy-to-clean vinyl rear seats and vinyl flooring.

Like the F-150 Lightning, the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV comes with a 12-inch digital cluster screen and a 12-inch landscape-style touchscreen in the middle. Outside, it has a front trunk (frunk) with a 399-liter lockable cargo area and a 220-amp DC-DC power source.

With a standard output of 452 horsepower and 1,051 Nm of torque, the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV has a maximum payload capacity of 1,013 kilograms (2,235 pounds) and can tow 3,175 kilograms (7,000 pounds). This can go up to 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) with the extended range version. Ford hasn’t revealed the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV’s range yet.

Also unique to the F-150 Lighting Pro SSV, it can be ordered to seamlessly connect to a police department’s existing fleet of Ford and non-Ford internal combustion engine and battery-electric vehicles, chargers, and fleet management software. When used together, police departments can proactively manage when vehicles are charged and serviced, resulting in potentially lower operating costs and improved uptime.
