Toyota Motor PH To Offer Hilux 4x4 EV

With Toyota Motor Philippines confirming the arrival of the all-new, ninth-generation Hilux, the only question remained was what sort of powertrain would they offer? Well, it seems we got an answer, albeit partially, in its first-ever government homologation papers.

Filings made with the Department of Energy suggest that Toyota Motor Philippines will add the Hilux BEV as its third battery electric vehicle after introducing the bZ4X and the Urban Cruiser.

According to publicly available specifications, Toyota will introduce the 4x4 variant of the Hilux BEV. With dual eAxle electric motors, it provides permanent all-wheel drive. Curiously, though the global version makes 196 horsepower combined, the single variant that received DOE certification only lists 129.3 kW or 176 horsepower. Torque isn’t stated, but in other markets, the front motor puts out 205 Nm, while the rear motor makes 268.6 Nm.

Confirmed for the Philippine market is a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery which should equate to up to 315 kilometers of range (240-kilometer WLTP). Though on the low side, Toyota is aiming for “best-in-class” charging capabilities to minimize vehicle downtime. In addition, the Hilux’s commercial vehicle spec aren’t compromised in its shift from combustion to purely electric—715 kilograms of payload and 1,600 kilograms of towing. A Diamond Guard offers robust underbody protection for the battery giving peace of mind, even during off-road driving.

The all-new Hilux comes with a “Tough and Agile” design concept. The “Cyber Sumo” front-end is so-named for the sumo wrestler’s pre-combat Shikiri Stance. Inside, it uses “Robust Simplicity” doubling down on practical usefulness without sacrificing modernity. Features include an electronic parking brake with auto hold, wireless charger, large digital instrument cluster (up to 12.3-inch) and large free-standing infotainment touchscreen (up to 12.3-inch). USB Type C chargers are found front and back, and dual zone climate control with rear vents.

While continuing with the IMV platform, enhancements were made toughening up the body rigidity, while improving the ride and handling. It adopts an electric power steering and four wheel disc brakes along with a Multi-Terrain Select that unlocks five different drive modes.

    1. Wait till it launches. Besides, Chinese automakers are always knows for offering cheap quality cars. Besides their cheaper price, nothing more to be offered. Putting it on the same category as the Japanese and Korean with the same price tag, nobody would buy Chinese. Like I always say, you get what you pay for

    2. The new Hilux EV has to conquer beer o clock hill itself and can't take credit for the ICE version's accomplishment. We'll see how Toyota implements its EV powertrain here. So far, when talking electrified systems, it seems only GWM and Denza have conquered the hill.

  5. 715 kg payload? This is basically a lifestyle pickup truck, same as the BYD Shark. Buyer beware.

    1. Lifestyle truck but with the suspension calibration of a workhorse 😅😆 sometimes I don't know if Toyota is really trying to make the Hilux a lifestyle pickup (for ex, Hilux GR-S and Hilux BEV) since the payload rating is much lower than the other variants, so they are not workhorses like the Hilux J, E, G or Conquest, but they still don't have the comfort of other lifestyle pickups like Ranger for example.

  8. It's an EV, so can we expect it to benefit from government incentives (cheaper)?
