Ford Teases Its Most Powerful Production Car Ever: the 2020 Shelby GT500 (w/ Video)

Despite introducing a track-oriented Mustang GT350R, Ford has been losing the horsepower war against the Dodge Challenger Demon and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Well, that’s about to change as Ford teased the “most powerful street-legal Ford ever.” Meet the 700-horsepower Mustang Shelby GT500.

Details are scarce at the moment, but Ford did say that it will have “700+ horsepower” via a supercharged V8 engine. Now whether the power figure remains at that nice round figure is anyone’s guess, but expect Ford engineers to at least give the Challenger Demon’s 707-horsepower output a go.

Currently, the most-powerful Ford Mustang, the GT350R has 526 horsepower from its naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V8. Reports say Ford will likely supercharge this engine to achieve 700 horsepower in the GT500.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 returns in 2019 as a 2020 model, five years after the previous GT500 bowed out.

Thankfully, news of Ford resurrecting the GT500 comes at a great time. The company just announced a shift to SUVs and EVs causing a panic to some performance car enthusiasts.
