A Free Software Upgrade Just Added More Performance to the Porsche Taycan

Porsche just showed the potential of Over-the-Air (OTA) firmware updates with its first software update for its all-electric Taycan.

Rolling out globally for free, it includes not just additional functions for its infotainment system, but also enhances its charging functions, and get this, even performance.

Thanks to updates to its chassis control system which improves slip control, the Taycan Turbo S further cuts 0.2 seconds to its 0 to 200 km/h time. In conjunction with Launch Control, the sprint will now take just 9.6 seconds.

It also optimizes the Taycan’s other control units such as transmission and drive component calibration.

Aside from being faster in a straight line, the adaptive air suspension includes a new “Smartlift” function. This allows the Taycan to be programmed so that its ride height is automatically raised at certain recurring locations such as road humps or garage driveways.

When it comes to charging, the update adds a new Battery-Saving Charging function. This reduces the charging capacity from up to 270 kW to 200 kW which lowers the battery temperature. This results in lower-impact charging and a more efficient charging process.

Interestingly, the update also unlocks Functions on Demand via the Porsche Connect Store. These are flexible upgrades add features to the Taycan even after they’ve been originally configured and purchased. They can be purchased outright or be taken out on a three-month free trial. These features include Power Steering Plus, Active Lane Keep Assist, and Porsche InnoDrive—the brand’s adaptive cruise control system. Activation takes mere minutes and can be done anywhere there’s a mobile network signal.

With cars relying more and more on software (it is now more like a smartphone or laptop with wheels), performance enhancements via firmware updates might become the norm for car manufacturers. It should serve as a win-win for customers since their cars will remain fresh throughout its product lifecycle.
