The BYD Tang DM-i Could Have The Fortuner, Montero Sport, And Everest Worried

If the arrival of the Sealion 5 DM-i and the Atto 2 weren’t enough, BYD Cars Philippines received yet another LTO homologation approval, but this time for the BYD Tang DM-i.

According to the documents, which were published today, the BYD Tang DM-i is classified as a wagon (weirdly enough), in theory. However, in reality, the 7-seater SUV is squarely in the mid-sized SUV segment thanks to its confirmed dimensions: 4,870 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,720 mm in height. It will have a wheelbase of 2,820 mm. Its curb weight is listed as 2,130 kilograms, while its net capacity is 525 kilograms (that puts each passenger to a 75-kilogram weight limit).

Based on the same document, the BYD Tang DM-i sports a 200-kW (272 horsepower) electric motor which points to it being equipped with the fifth-generation DM-i (DM 5.0) system. Coupled with a 156-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder (BYD472ZQB 1.5 T), it’ll have a combined output of 310 kW (421 horsepower). Top speed is 200 km/h, while 0 to 100 km/h is dispatched in 7.5 seconds.

Thanks to a 21.5-kWh BYD Blade Battery, it’ll have a 110-kilometer all-electric range (per its LTO homologation). It can be charged using either AC (3 hours) or DC (22 minutes) charging standards.

Other confirmed specs are its wheels and tires which are sized at 255/50R20 for both the front and back. If the Philippines were to echo the specs of the BYD Tang DM-i in China, expect it to gain features such as frequency selective dampers.

With the BYD Tang DM-i receiving the go-signal from the LTO to be sold in the Philippines, it’s just going to be a matter of time before this mid-sized SUV will be offered for sale. Once it does, expect it to go against the likes of the Fortuner, Terra, and Montero Sport which points to a possible P 2-million starting price.

  1. Are we getting the brand new cars, or the “zero mileage” cars?

    1. The zero mileage cars would have had to be registered, so no. We're not getting the zero mileage cars.

  2. Ppv buyers usually doesn't consider gas and monocoque chassis vehicles. They are the conservative one who usually opt for diesel. If there is a ppv diesel based sub then maybe

  3. Car buyers should research the background of their car options and should not be easily swayed by propaganda and decent specifications no matter how good they may appear. While buyers have all the right to their own money and preferences, some cars are better choices if only buyers did due background checks as it will ultimately affect and bite them sooner than later. Case in point, BYDs are produced in such high quantities (4M+ a year) to flood the market and squeeze the competition, no thanks to high government subsidies, 270 days delayed payment to suppliers and exploitative labor practices. With such practices, like the Evergrande, once one of the largest real estate developers in the world, accumulated massive debt through aggressive borrowing and leverage and eventually collapsed. Thousands of BYD dealerships in China have shut down in a year- China Observer. When you flood the market, somebody drowns. To be fair its not only BYDs that are facing difficulties in China but the entire EV industry with the inherent shortcomings of the electric vehicles platform like the Xiaomi SU7 incident that killed 3 students as Xiomi like many other EV manufacturers have no prior car building heritage. Its your money and life at stake so choose wisely.
