Subaru To Bring Both e-Boxer and SHEV In The Philippines

Motor Image may be mixing old and new hybrid tech when it comes to their electrified vehicle offerings in the Philippines. This is based on approved filings made with the Department of Energy.

Appearing in the government agency’s recognized Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) list is both the e-Boxer and SHEV system, which will power the Crosstrek and Forester, respectively. Irrespective of the system, both will gain the coveted green number plate which gives it perks such as number coding exemption as well as priority registration.

However, it’s worth noting that the e-Boxer and SHEV are two different hybrid systems that offer a world of difference both in terms of performance and efficiency.

Although the SHEV system has also made its debut in the Crosstrek, Motor Image has opted for e-Boxer for the Philippine market Crosstrek instead.

In terms of technology, the e-Boxer is the older one, having debuted way back in 2018 in the Crosstrek’s predecessor, the Subaru XV. Technically, it’s a mild hybrid setup so fuel efficiency improvements are modest at best (around 10 percent improvement in real-world scenarios).

However, because its electric motor has its own indicated output (17 horsepower or 12.3 kW and 65 Nm) and it can run purely in EV mode thanks to a 0.57 kWh battery, it manages to get the DOE’s nod. The battery, however, reduces the fuel tank from 60 to 48 liters.

On the other hand, with the Forester getting the full model change treatment, this one gets the latest SHEV or Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicle system. Curiously, this one’s still called e-Boxer (second-generation e-Boxer?).

From the 2.0-liter e-Boxer’s mild-hybrid system, this one’s an all-new series-parallel system that uses a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle Boxer engine with 165 horsepower (121 kW) and 209 Nm. This is supplemented by two three-phase AC synchronous electric motors (one providing traction, the other a generator) pushing out 120 horsepower (90 kW) and 276 Nm of torque. Combined it makes 197 horsepower making it the most powerful variant of the Forester since the demise of the turbocharged Forester XT.

It’s already been confirmed previously that Subaru will be launching its hybrid models in the latter quarter of 2025, and with the DOE approval of both the Crosstrek e-Boxer and Forester SHEV (Forester e-Boxer), it’s just going to be a matter of months before it arrives in showrooms.

  1. Very nice
Most likely it'll be priced like a Honda CRV Hybrid and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
Subaru Philippines really need these vehicles

  2. Hopefully priced well from the start. So they don't have to offer discounts afterwards.

  3. Unfortunately, as much as I love Subaru's - i've moved on given their slow electrification and even improvement on their models. For the same price as the RAV 4 Hybrid, CRV Hybrid, etc. you can get a Tesla Model Y if you want to go Full EV. I'm waiting on the Zeekr 7x launch before deciding on a Model Y or the 7x to replace my aging Subaru.

    2. Tesla Model Y is shit? haha!! don't make me laugh! it was the number 1 selling car in the world for a reason. As for Zeekr 7x? don't look down on the premium brands of China. In a few years they'd be up there among the best. Similar to Hyundai and Kia back then when people looked down on them. Where are they now?

For the 7x - Active air suspension with continuous damping control for Php3M? I don't think you have ridden on a S-Class but I have. The airmatic of the S-Class makes it a dream to ride in our pothole riddled roads.

    3. Yep. Those are shit. You can't keep those cars for 20 years. Lots of old Subarus are still running, those that were maintained properly. Those you mentioned though?? Doubt it, especially in the Philippines' road conditions and parts supply

  4. Why are they bringing the older e-boxer hybrid when the crosstrek shev is available?
