To Prove Its Durability, MG Is Driving A Cyberster From UK To China

Recent news of the MG 5 / MG GT’s dismal crash test results may have some questioning the overall durability and build quality of MG cars, but make no mistake: they can still make quality vehicles. Case in point is the highly-anticipated Cyberster which is currently on its way from Europe to China.

Confirmed for a Q1 2024 launch in the Philippines, the Cyberster in its highest trim delivers 544 horsepower and 725 Nm of torque, launching it from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds. Outfitted with either a 64 or 77 kWh battery, it can go up to 480 kilometers between charges.

In its latest update, MG says the two-seater EV roadster has finished its European tour, logging in around 8,500 miles (13,679 kilometers) in the process. The pre-production unit had to cover more kilometers than originally planned due to its popularity with both MG and EV enthusiasts.

To date the MG has visited France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Spain and Italy, and pretty much the whole of the UK where it started its journey last September 12.

Next up, the Cyberster will travel along parts of the Silk Road route, visiting areas covering Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam,, and the Philippines. The drive will finish in Shanghai, China, where MG’s parent company, SAIC is headquartered.

The two adventurers behind the wheel—Ross and Hugo Turner—say the Cyberster has proven itself to be a practical convertible, “more than capable of being driven the long distances.”

Hugo said, “Most people would expect a head-turning convertible like the Cyberster to have no luggage space, but I can fit in the trunk! And there’s plenty of room in the cabin. We’ve spent most of the time with the roof down too, and there hasn’t been wind noise or buffeting, despite both of us being over six feet tall.”

“We’ve driven more than 8,500 miles (13,679 kilometers), and I have a bad back having broken my neck many years ago, but it’s been outrageously comfortable. At no stage have I got out the car in any pain, and there were days when it covered more than 250 miles (402 kilometers) between legs.”

With many people curious about electric vehicles, including questions about driving range and charging, this UK to China drive showcases what an electric car can achieve.

  4. They could drive from their factory in Fujian to UK but instead chose to fly one Cyberster to the UK to start there.

You can really sense that this company is trying its best, not in improving its crash results nor on improving its durability, but in performing these marketing gymnastics to drive hard this lie that it is a British brand.
