The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) for the month of May reported new car sales reaching 33,532 units—a 24 percent improvement versus the previous month. Together with industry estimates, the May total auto market results ended at around 35,200 units, reflecting 6.9 percent increase from the previous month.
Historically, May serves as a rebound month after a lean April market. CAMPI President Jose Maria Atienza stated that focus on energy efficiency remains as a major factor in the customers’ purchasing decision.
Among CAMPI-TMA members, Toyota leads all brands with a more than 50 percent market share (17,076 units). They’re followed by Mitsubishi with 16 percent (5,415 units) and Suzuki in third with 4 percent (1,441 units).
CAMPI-TMA figures do not reflect figures from non-member brands such as BYD/Denza. They are, however, included in the industry estimates. With an estimated 1,668 units sold, they should continue to be the third best-selling car brand last May.

In terms of month-on-month performance, the best performer, by and large, is Tesla which saw its sales rocket 801.1 percent last May (829 units). Brands like Honda and Hyundai also managed to get out of their slumps registering upticks of 93.9 percent and 23.5 percent, respectively. With more hybrid Foresters available, Subaru also saw its sales up 85.7 percent (39 units versus just 21 last April).
When it comes to brands that saw month-on-month declines, these are Chinese brands such as Hongqi (-55.6 percent), Lynk & Co (-77.4 percent), Changan (-30.3 percent), and BAIC (-17.3 percent). BMW and Isuzu also saw sales drop by 17.6 percent and 4.2 percent, respectively.

“We continue to observe expanding demand for various types of Electrified Vehicles (xEVs), with cumulative January to May sales already doubling vs. last year. xEVs now account for 18 percent of the total market, up by 9 points from the previous year. The accelerating growth trend is only held back by availability constraints resulting from the sudden surge in demand,” said Atienza.

“Meanwhile, the more stable fuel prices also helped pull up demand for conventional Internal Combustion Engine vehicles, with May ICE sales growing by 32 percent versus the previous month. Our overall market outlook has improved with actual vehicle sales performing better than previously expected despite the fuel crisis,” he added.

ReplyDeleteApril byd/Denza sales estimates 5k and May 1.6k is a very big drop. Maybe bcoz byd ph increased prices, fuel prices almost returned to pre war prices and also comrades offering more products for less price than Byd
ReplyDeleteAt 829 units, Tesla's lone "store" must handle 32 releases per day Monday to Saturday. That's very busy. Can they keep up the level of customer service at that pace?
