2024 Mazda CX-90 Confirmed To Get Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

Ahead of its world premiere next month, Mazda has shown yet another teaser photo of its new flagship SUV: the 2024 CX-90.

After showing off the Inline-6 fender badge, the newest teaser photo shows off the CX-90’s rear taillight cluster. Compared to the pioneering member of the Large Product family—the CX-60—the larger three-row SUV’s taillight looks much more angular and pronounced. There are even some strong BMW influences here.

In one of the two teaser photos (see lead photo), it’s very clear that the CX-90 will come with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivetrain. This is evidenced by the “e-Skyactiv PHEV” badge.

Given that the three-row CX-90 shares the same platform as the two-row CX-60, it’s safe to assume it’ll also be sharing the same family of engines too. And if we’re talking about PHEVs, this could mean using the electrified 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine. Thanks to a 135-horsepower electric motor, it puts out (at least) 327 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque making it the most powerful production vehicle Mazda has ever.

Moreover, because the CX-90 is now a global model, it also could stand to get the CX-60’s 3.3-liter Skyactiv-G and 3.3-liter Skyactiv-D engines. Both offer a 48-volt mild hybrid system with the diesel getting a new tech called Distribution-controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition (DCPCI).

The CX-90 will also be the first member of the Large Product family to get Artisan Red, Mazda’s newest Takuminuri Color; although since then, Mazda decided to offer it on the limited-edition Mazda6 20th Anniversary Edition.
