Bemoaning the loss of the manual transmission? Ferrari is bringing back the fun and engagement of a three-pedal Prancing Horse as part of a limited-edition series for its 12Cilindri supercar (read our first drive). But unlike a traditional manual transmission car, the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale uses a “manual-by-wire” system—the brand’s first.
Calling it a “contemporary reinterpretation of the analog gear shifting experience,” the 12Cilindri Manuale starts with the same 6.5-liter V12 (830 horsepower, 678 Nm) and 8-speed dual clutch transmission as the typical 12Cilindri. In fact, it can be operated on fully automatic mode.
From there, Ferrari engineers have added a new clutch-by-wire pedal in the 12Cilindri Manuale wherein a position sensor on the pedal assembly translates that into hydraulic actuation of the DCT clutch. And despite having no mechanical connection with the clutch pedal itself, the system does create the feel of a manual gearbox. An angle position sensor continuously reads the driver’s intent throughout the entire range of pedal travel. This results in behavior consistent with a traditional manual: correct synchronization yields a smooth, precise gear change; otherwise, it may result in a jerk or a stall.
Activating the manual mode is done via the clutch pedal. Once activated, it allows the driver to take full and direct control of the 12Cilindri’s dual clutch transmission (up to the first six gears); even down to possibly pre-select a gear via the lever. It can even accommodate maneuvers such as heel-and-toe if the driver’s capable. The gear selector, highlighted by the iconic gear shift gate, is self-centering—the lever returns to the neutral position via a system of eccentric rollers. To engage reverse gear, the lever must be pressed downwards.
Limited to just 1,499 units, the 12Cilindri Manuale carry specific details such as laser-etched side logos, and a pinstripe detail that runs the front splitter and rear wings. Exclusive forged wheels and an embossed version of the Ferrari shield (scudetto) are available options too.
