Geely Just Made A Baha-Proof 2.0-liter Turbo Engine

First showcased in the Galaxy Cruiser 700 (pictured) where it was paired with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and 3-speed intelligent hybrid transmission, Geely-owned Horse Powertrain has revealed a fully waterproof engine: the Horse B20.

Designed for extreme off-road vehicles and deep-water wading, the Horse B20 can now bring true all-terrain capabilities to hybrid vehicles, including applications for body-on-frame SUVs and pickup trucks. Fully compliant with IPX8 waterproofing standards, the Horse B20 can operate submerged up to 1.1 meters (3.6 feet).

It is also capable of maintaining continuous and stable power output under extreme off-road high-load conditions including 100 percent grade climbing.

Weighing just 130 kilograms, the Horse B20 is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder direct injection gasoline engine designed for HEV, PHEV, and REEV applications. Featuring a turbocharger, its outputs range from 190 horsepower (140 kW) to 251 horsepower (185 kW) and 300 to 380Nm of torque. The engine is powered by an advanced Miller cycle, enabling an ultra-high thermal efficiency of 48.4 percent.

The Horse B20 features a range of innovations to encourage leaner, cleaner combustion and to maximize fuel economy and range. These include high-pressure injectors and high-tumble intake ports, which promote superior air-fuel mixing and more efficient combustion. Additionally, the engine features pistons designed to make full use of the “squish” effect to promote air-fuel mixing at the peak of the compression cycle – this enables the spark plug to ignite a cleaner and faster combustion event.

Outside the engine cylinders, the Horse B20 uses a number of innovative technologies. These include a gantry-type aluminum block with integrated exhaust manifold and a simplified balance shaft system, which improve NVH, durability, and overall efficiency. It also features a variable displacement oil pump ensuring optimal oil flow and pressure throughout the engine.

To improve the cooling efficiency, an exclusive fully active dual-cooling system ensures the unit remains in the optimal operating temperature, even under extreme conditions such as continuous slope climbing and long-duration, high-temperature scenarios.

To achieve the IPX8 waterproof rating, the engine uses a fully sealed waterproof structure equipped with torsional vibration dampers and dedicated engine-transmission sealing. Fitted with IPX8-rated electrical components and sensors, it continuously monitors the surrounding operating environment of the engine. When the engine is submerged in water, the control system makes automatic adjustments such as limiting power or adjusting the throttle response, based on feedback signals from the sensors. This ensures the stable operation of the engine under deep wading conditions.

  1. These chinese cars engine development is unheared of. The research and devt done to it is out of this world.. the last innovative engine technology i knew is the VTEC of honda.. which unfortunately was scrapped amd discontinued due to failed emission standards of euro 4, 5, 6.

  2. try at your own risk. we all know that even under warranty it will take forever to get your replacement parts

    1. People know better to ask around from real owners instead of taking advice from comments sections like these. Someone I know took a chance at a chinese car because her 7 year-old innova needed a 3 month wait for a part. The wait was the same for casa supply and local shops who directly import parts.

  3. the technology china is talking about is just full if gimmicks. apple just released its folding phone. china had this for years even a tri fold or rollavle display. nobidy cares honestly. full of gimmicks no practical use in real world. china always trying too hard ro impress

    1. Keep telling yourself no one cares. Their increasing sales and market-share (in tech/cars, etc.) worldwide kinda say otherwise. The fact that Apple is following suit literally means the 'gimmicks' lead to interest & sales. You seem to be trying a little to hard to convince yourself that these things mean nothing.

  5. Horse Powertrain is actually split owned by Renault (45%), Geely (45%), and Saudi Aramco (10%).

There's a fantastic interview on youtube by some US car industry veterans talking to a representative for Horse Powertrain's US office.

One point raised was something Sergio Marchionne, the former CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) pointed out in "Confessions of a Capital Junkie" where he (essentially) says that so many car companies spent billions in independent research and development to arrive at the same inline 4 engine.

Horse Powertrain is (in my opinion) something to closely watch in the future as many companies may very well offload their ICE development to them purely for the development savings and perhaps even massively scaled manufacturing benefits.
