Well, that didn’t take long. After confirming that its plug-in hybrid models are coming to the Philippines, the Mazda CX-80 just appeared in the Department of Energy’s list of recognized Plug-In Hybrids.
Paving the way toward its local sale, the CX-80 appeared on the DOE’s website in two configurations: the CX-80 Premium and the CX-80 Exclusive.
Both variants of the CX-80 use a 2.5-liter PHEV powertrain. Here, the 192 horsepower, 261 Nm 2.5-liter direct-injected Skyactiv-G engine is mated to a 175 horsepower electric motor delivering a combined output of 327 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. Moreover, thanks to a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery, it offers an all-electric range of around 62 kilometers (WLTP).
Like the CX-60 and the CX-90, the CX-80 PHEV also uses a multi-clutch eight-speed automatic. Not only does this offer the same “rhythmic gear changes” drivers associate with a manual transmission, but it also allows the precise blending of power between the combustion engine and electric motors at all speeds.
With the CX-80 Premium and CX-80 Exclusive being mechanically identical, the difference is basically down to trim.
Based on the accompanying photo of the DOE filing, the CX-80 Premium will serve as the top-of-the-line variant with sportier bumper, high-gloss black side vents, and black 20-inch alloy wheels. It’s also likely the variant to get the more luxurious 6-seater (2+2+2) configuration.
Meanwhile, the CX-80 Exclusive gets the simpler bumper design, more chrome, and silver 20-inch alloy wheels. And based on how Mazda positioned the CX-90, it’s probably going to have a 7-seater (2+3+2) configuration.
With the Mazda CX-80 getting the DOE’s nod, it’s likely that the launch is no more than a couple of months away. Could Mazda Philippines spring a surprise before the end of 2026?
