Toyota Corolla Cross Achieves 5-Star ASEAN NCAP Safety Rating

Toyota’s newest compact crossover, the Corolla Cross scored a perfect 5-star safety rating at its recent ASEAN New Car Assessment Program or NCAP test. But there’s a caveat.

The Corolla Cross scored very well in Adult Occupant Protection, scoring a 45.85 out of 50. While it fared well with regards to side impacts, it provided merely adequate protection to the driver’s chest and only a marginal rating for the driver’s right leg. When it came to Child Occupant Protection, it scored a 22.63 out of 25.

In order to achieve the coveted 5-star safety rating though, the Corolla Cross needs to be fitted with advanced safety assist technologies. While it scored a 20.14 out of a possible 25, the variant tested by the ASEAN NCAP featured autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, and front collision warning—part of the Toyota Safety Sense or TSS. Without them, such as in the case of the 1.8 G, its Safety Assist score will drop 4 points. At 84.61 out of 100, it would still be enough for a 5-star safety rating.
