The Toyota GR Corolla Is Headed To ASEAN

How’s this for a plot twist? It seems the ASEAN region will be getting the hotly-anticipated Toyota GR Corolla after all. Unveiled early this year initially for the North American market, and then subsequently, for the Japanese market, it seems more global markets are set to get Toyota’s new hot hatch.

Australia was the first market in the Asia-Oceania region to confirm the arrival of the GR Corolla with a 500-unit allocation arriving there by the first quarter of 2023. Surprisingly, it won’t be replacing the smaller GR Yaris. Instead, Toyota Australia confirmed that an additional 160 units of the GR Yaris will be arriving for the entirety of 2023.

Closer to the Philippines, Thailand is set to launch the GR Corolla as well. The hot hatch is part of Toyota Thailand’s 60th anniversary festivities which will be capped off with a visit from Toyota President Akio Toyoda. Toyoda will be arriving there in December, and will personally launch the GR Corolla reports say.

Naturally, Toyota Thailand hasn’t released any info on the GR Corolla, but expect it to offer the same 1.6-liter G16E-GTS engine found in the GR Yaris. For its application here, however, it’s been uprated to 304 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque. The sole transmission, of course, is a 6-speed manual driving all four wheels via a GR-Four all-wheel drive system with a limited slip differential.

Now, as for pricing, it’s reported that Toyota Thailand will be positioning the GR Corolla between the GR Yaris and GR 86 price-wise. This means a pricing region somewhere between 2.690 million Baht and (P 4.139 million) P 2.949 million Baht (P 4.53 million). Of course, the expensive price tag is down to Thailand’s protective tariff on imported vehicles. When it does arrives here, it will likely be priced between the GR Yaris and the GR Supra. This means a price tag somewhere between P 3 million to P 4 million.

Toyota Motor Philippines has yet to confirm whether or not they will be offering the GR Corolla locally, but if they do, expect it to be a limited run model similar.
