Sibling Rivalry? Source Says Jetour Distributor Bags PH Rights To Sell Chery EV

In what seems to be a bit of sibling rivalry, the newly appointed Philippine distributor of Jetour has managed a coup against current Chery distributor, UAAGI by securing the local rights to distribute the Chery QQ Ice Cream EV.

A source close to both brands says that the AutospeedyGo and Gateway Group collaboration managed to snag the rights to the entry-level all-electric hatchback. Even more surprising, it might be making its first public preview at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) in April.

From the business perspective, it makes sense for the Chery Automotive Group to award the distribution rights of the QQ Ice Cream EV to the folks behind Jetour because they are at the forefront of the local EV game. The Gateway Group has had extensive experience dealing with EVs being the sole dealer group tasked to sell the Nissan Leaf. They are also the first Hyundai dealer group that signed up to sell and service the Ioniq 5.

The addition of the Chery QQ Ice Cream EV is certainly complementary to their current portfolio because it can serve as their entry-level EV offering.

In China, the QQ Ice Cream EV sells for about RMB 30,000 (P 238,000) and is the first model in Chery’s iCar Ecology division. Measuring at just 2,980 mm long, 1,496 mm wide, and 1,637 mm tall, it’s packaged similarly to a Japanese kei car.

It’s powered by a rear-mounted electric motor making a very modest 27 horsepower and 85 Nm of torque. But with just 743 kilograms to push around, it does have a rated top speed of 100 km/h. The electric motor draws its power from a lithium iron phosphate battery giving it a cruising range of up to 170 kilometers on a single charge.

The Chery QQ Ice Cream EV goes against the Wuling Hongguan Mini EV which is being brought in by several gray market importers.
