Meet The "Smallest" Land Cruiser Yet: The 2026 Land Cruiser FJ

Toyota is bringing back the FJ Cruiser as the Land Cruiser FJ—the fourth member of the brand’s growing Land Cruiser line-up, joining the Land Cruiser 70, Land Cruiser 250/Prado, and the Land Cruiser 300. The Land Cruiser FJ is yet another vehicle that will be displayed at the brand’s pavilion at the Japan Mobility Show.

The new Land Cruiser FJ measures in at just 4,575 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,960 mm in height With a wheelbase of 2,580 mm—this two-row, 5-seater SUV becomes the smallest member of the Land Cruiser family and is squarely sized like a compact SUV. It is meant to serve a new market segment, one that recognizes the Land Cruiser’s reliability, durability, and off-road performance, but seek a new kind of Land Cruiser.

Underpinned by the IMV platform—the same one used by the Fortuner, Innova, and Hilux—the Land Cruiser FJ has outstanding off-road performance “worthy of a Land Cruiser.” For example, its wheel articulation matches that of the larger Land Cruiser 70 Series. In addition, it’s been enhanced with additional braces under the floor. Together with its inherently higher body rigidity, it’ll have better handling both on- and off-road, while keeping its minimum turning radius down to just 5.5 meters.

Powering the Land Cruiser FJ, so far, is a single powertrain option—the 2TR-FE 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 163 horsepower (120 kW) and 246 Nm of torque. This is mated to a 6-speed Super ECT transmission with a part-time four-wheel drive system.

Design-wise, the Land Cruiser FJ fuses traditional Land Cruiser cues such as a strong sense of mass through its boxy body with chamfered edges. Function follows form with the front and rear corner bumpers designed to be removable in segments, allowing ease of repair. It even features an old-school style side swinging tailgate and a tailgate-mounted spare tire. It also considers customizability that allows users to enjoy the Land Cruiser FJ in their own unique ways. For example, it can be speced with round headlights and come with MOLLE panels for attaching outdoor equipment.

The silhouette emphasizes the square cabin which takes into consideration the habitability and cargo capacity that’s always been prioritized by Land Cruisers. In that regard, the horizontal layout makes the controls easy to understand, always allowing for natural operation. The low-set cowl and instrument panel also helps improve visibility, especially when tackling trails and off-road terrain.

While Toyota has yet to formally outline the on-board amenities of the Land Cruiser FJ, some of the more noticeable features found in the photos include a digital gauge cluster, a large infotainment screen with USB inputs, dual zone climate control, heated seats, and proper switches and buttons.

Confirmed by Toyota is that the Land Cruiser FJ comes with Toyota Safety Sense with advanced functionality including Pre-Collision Safety System for added peace of mind.

So far, Toyota has confirmed that the 2026 Land Cruiser FJ will be made available for the Japanese market by mid next year. And while it has been confirmed to be a global model, launch plans and timelines for other markets have yet to be announced.

Toyota will reveal more details of the 2026 Land Cruiser FJ at the Japan Mobility Show at the end of October.

  3. No hybrid engine coming? Also, will it be comfortable for every day use? We all know 90% of buyers would use to for grocery shopping.

  4. They absolutely nailed the dimensions right! Will there be a Lexus variant since its a Land Cruiser?

    1. I doubt. It will be built in Thailand using the IMV-0 platform. No Lexus vehicle has ever used that platform.

  5. They should offer a promo where you get a free .45 when buying the dream car of your average road rager.

    1. Yes, but it should be modified to fire backwards.

  6. Basically the 4WD Tamaraw Wagon (albeit in Super SWB form) that we all wanted and waited for. I heard that it was supposed to come with the 1GD as an option but Toyota had trouble with certification.

  7. This may slot in above the Fortuner but below the Prado. Hopefully priced near the Fortuner. Ladder frame chassis many will buy it here if offered with diesel

    1. This will slot below the Fortuner. It isn't positioned the same way the previous FJ Cruiser was.

    2. I wonder if a proper Land Cruiser will excel with the IMV platform

  8. I had a 2006 prado with the same 2TR-FE engine. Its a very smooth engine but drinks gas like crazy..

    1. your prado is old, and heavy.

    2. Land Cruisers are meant for performance, particularly off-road. Expect them to be thirsty. With the Land Cruiser FJ having a 2.7 liter engine, I expect it to be thirsty as well, but less thirsty than the Prado and LC for sure.

  9. hmm, I'm sure it's gonna be overpriced too

    1. Yeah, this is not a small enough package to dethrone the Jimny. lol

    2. Lol. This won’t put a dent on Jimny sales. It’s going to be branded as a Land Cruiser and will carry Land Cruiser pricing. Jimnys are cheap.

    3. "Jimny's are cheap" until you look at the price of the 5 door Jimny.. the Land Cruiser FJ will probably be just 100k more than the 5 door Jimny

    4. This is marketed as a Land Cruiser, it will probably be priced near the 3m range. If so, it will barely affect Jimny sales.

    5. It is Land Cruiser in name, but it is meant to be a much cheaper than the Land Cruiser Prado by being built on the Hilux Champ/Tamaraw platform. It is meant to be a simple off-roader. It will most likely start at 1.9M PHP, and that is already factoring the "Toyota (+ Land Cruiser) tax" (meaning it is a lot cheaper to produce than it is sold). Same as Jimny; very cheap to produce but very very expensive to retail.

  11. I don't know what to think of it. Maybe it looks better in person and maybe the drivetrain is better than what the specs might otherwise suggest. But until then, I think I'll hold on to my 2017 FJC for a few more years.

  12. This NEEDS a diesel option.

  13. Wow! Innova-size compact LC.
    No diesel and hybrid yet?

  14. I find the engine choice quite questionable. Sure its very durable but it's a gas guzzler with only average performance.

    1. That seems to be a common enough sentiment on many of Toyota's recent LC releases. I know I've heard it mentioned frequently on a few videos I've watched covering LCs.

  15. Hev or a single turbo v6 diesel and it'll become a true land cruiser!

  16. Here is hoping they would develop a left-hand-drive body for markets such as PH, VN, Mideast, EU. The rear door opening on the photo is for right-hand-drive, much like the current Jimny. The door should not swing towards the curb-side for left-hand-drive units so as not to obstruct while loading. The previous Trooper and Crosswind had such feature.

  17. The 2TR-FE is a very reliable and basically indestructable engine. However, it's efficiency is quite poor and emissions will not pass stricter regulations. I guess the silver lining is that it is probably way lighter than the Prado/Fortuner, which means it can't be that bad in terms of efficiency and emissions.

However, I wonder why they didn't use the T24A engine, which is already compliant to global emission standards and is more efficient. The rumored G20E coming in the next gen Hilux/Fortuner would've been fantastic also. My guess is that the Land Cruiser FJ will be marketed in countries where emission standards aren't as strict, including Japan and all developing countries, and the 2TR-FE engine is the cheapest engine they could put. And no, this is probably not a "reliability" reason because this is Toyota we are talking about, they can make their new engines also the most reliable if they wanted to.

  19. Future cash grab model by TMP

  20. First impressions: looks like an over-accessorized kid. I wanted this to be a Jimny fighter with simple utilitarian looks and less (or none) of the butch fender flares. That said, I can see the Tamaraw resemblance in the front and sides of the engine bay.

  21. Land Cruisers are usually built in Japan except for those Land Cruisers made in China only sold in China. Will this Land Cruiser FJ to be produced in Thailand have any issue? Hope it’s gonna be made in Japan to ensure its quality would be at its best.

    1. Land Cruiser FJ will be exclusively built in Thailand and won't be manufactured in Japan.
It'll be assembled and built on the same plant where the Fortuner,Hilux and Hilux Champ are produced in Thailand

  22. This car will not be comfortable, the fastest, most efficient, practical, and cheap. Nevertheless like the old FJ it will sell a lot because of its old tried and tested mechanicals. A disadvantage becomes the real advantage for some. This car is not for everybody

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wait isn't the 2TR-FE the same engine as the 2.7 gas Fortuner? It's our family car, 2006 model, still runs very smooth even being almost 20 years old. I imagine the newer one here would have updates for efficiency as our Fortuner just takes too much fuel despite all the hypermile efforts.

    1. For sure this Land Cruiser FJ is gonna be thirsty.

  24. Ironically, this new Land Cruiser FJ is probably the most faithful to the original purpose of the Land Cruiser, even if it isn't built on a "real" Land Cruiser platform. Nowadays, the Land Cruiser is seen as a luxury vehicle. Even the ancient 70-series, which was meant to be the workhorse of the lineup, is still luxury in terms of pricing. This one is cheap, reliable, easy to fix, and accessible; just like the original FJ40. No luxuries at all, just an honest off-roader without the pretense of a new Land Cruiser.

  25. Is the 4575mm length including the spare tire?

    1. Most likely priced at 3 Million Pesos and up as its more expensive than the Fortuner and Hilux GR-S

    2. No way Toyota will sell this for 3 million. I expect 2 million max, since it will be positioned below the Fortuner.

  27. Will this made in Thailand Land Cruiser FJ be inferior to made. In Japan Land Cruiser? I'm confident regarding quality of made in Japan vehicles but so-so on made in Thailand vehicles.

  28. A proper baby Land Cruiser Prado but not made in Japan.

  29. The Land Cruiser FJ has a real retro Land Cruiser looks; but with it sitting on a different platform, is it a real Land Cruiser?

  30. Will the Land Cruiser FJ new model have hybrid version?
