Look out Ranger Raptor and Hilux GR-S, BYD’s beefing up its Shark 6 DMO with added performance. Just released in Australia, the Shark 6 Performance sits atop the carmaker’s range with added grunt and capability.
The big change is its turbocharged gasoline generator. The 1.5-liter turbo from the regular Shark 6 has been replaced with a 2.0-liter turbocharged generator. This boosts the total system output and torque to 476 horsepower (350 kW) and 700 Nm of torque. This equates to a 5.5-second 0 to 100 km/h time and a 76.92 km/L when its state of charge drops below 25 percent.
The added grunt allows the Shark 6 Performance to up its towing capacity to 3,500 kilograms—up 1,000 kilograms from the regular Shark 6. The rest of the powertrain such as 29.58 kWh LFP battery, the dual motor output and all-wheel architecture remain.
Like the regular Shark 6 DMO, the Shark 6 Performance has three driving modes—EV Pure Electric Mode, HEV Series Mode, and HEV Parallel Mode.
That said, a new “Crawl Mode” debuts on the Shark 6 Performance, vastly improving the vehicle’s off-road credentials beyond the existing “Mountain Mode” which manages traction and braking performance across moderate slopes and uneven terrain.
Crawl Mode is designed for the tough stuff—rocks, steep climbs, deep ruts. When activated, Crawl Mode limits the Shark 6 to a maximum of 20 km/h and continuously adjusts torque to keep the wheels moving without slipping. The best part is that Crawl Mode will be released via an over-the-air (OTA) update later.
