MG is racing ahead of other carmakers in introducing a world’s first semi-solid state battery. Despite the rather misleading, “SolidCore Battery” name, this new battery delivers better range, faster charging capability, and improved safety whatever the temperature conditions.
MG’s SolidCore Battery is considered as an intermediary technology between conventional lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes and all-solid state batteries by using semi-solid electrolytes.
Electrolytes are what allows electrically charged particles to pass between cathodes allowing the battery to charge and discharge. Typically, they’re liquid in form which makes them susceptible to extreme heat and cold; it’s also the reason why certain chemistries result in a thermal runaway.
With SolidCore, MG says its batteries will become more energy dense equating to longer range. Moreover, it’ll be less susceptible to temperature fluctuations making it more robust in tropical climates such as the Philippines.
Designed first for the European market, MG’s SolidCore Battery is a by product of the company’s global engineering network that spans the United Kingdom, China, and now, Germany. This will help the company’s long-term commitment in developing vehicles which are advanced, reliable, and accessible.
In the Philippines, MG has pivoted increasingly to electrified vehicles. For example, its MG Hybrid+ uses advanced hardware and software to optimize fuel consumption while still delivering power when needed. Some unique features include a larger 1.83kWh lithium-ion battery to increase electric-only range and an innovative 3-speed hybrid transmission. The Hybrid+ also has eight different propulsion modes, intelligently managed by a Hybrid Control Unit (HCU).
MG is set to market its first-ever PHEV offering, the G50 PHEV.
“The introduction of MG’s latest battery and hybrid technologies globally signals an exciting direction for the brand, and one that we are eager to bring closer to the Philippine market,” said Mr. Wei Wei Zhang, President of MG Motor Philippines. “With Hybrid+ already available in the Philippines, this represents only the beginning of our electrification journey. As we continue to expand our lineup, our focus remains on providing Filipino customers with global-quality vehicles that combine innovation, performance, and everyday practicality—supporting the country’s transition toward smarter and more sustainable mobility.”

Should have named it SemisolidCore.
