The Subaru WRX Wagon Offers Performance Level Driving For Everyday Living

Before there were crossovers, there were wagons. These were the classic modes of transport that allowed you to move people and a good amount of cargo without having your car look like a stackable, as how most sedans would turn out to be once packing was completed. This kind of vehicle format quickly inspired the development of a hatch. Not only is it functional, but it offers the most practical way to load and unload whatever cargo you may have with little obstruction.

Today, wagons are more of an aesthetic or lifestyle choice, but thankfully, Subaru still heeds the call and combines its signature driving performance with efficient everyday usability. Let’s face it — a car is made to be driven and the only way you can truly appreciate it is if it becomes relevant daily (not just on the occasional weekend drive). This is why the Subaru WRX Wagon is your new best friend when it comes to delivering performance level driving, all day, every day.

The Subaru WRX Wagon is packed with power, running on a 2.4-liter turbocharged CVT. It delivers a maximum output of 275 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. This combination is well-tuned. The generous displacement handles low-end torque duties, while the turbocharger kicks in when singing at all song. Whatever the occasion, it never feels lacking in power. On the flipside, it does mean a 7.14 km/L economy figure even in relative post-Hormuz traffic (average of 20 km/h).

As one of the latest in Subaru’s line-up, it is built with the renowned Subaru Global Platform for superior stability, maneuverability, and control. The fact that it’s a Subaru made it immediately familiar—from the seating to the handling, and the easy maneuverability. And for someone who lives a multi-faceted lifestyle, with the need to go from one place to the next through unpredictable road conditions and weather, the performance of the WRX Wagon proved to be unparalleled and empowering.

Unlike standard SUVs that are made to work—inside and out—the Subaru WRX Wagon is designed with a sporty, rally-inspired exterior that is reminiscent of track days and high-level driving. It offers a streamlined, long-roof body with a chrome front grille that is complemented by C-shaped headlamps and 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/45R18 tires. Subaru incorporates its WRX hood scoop to the Wagon variant that not only gives the car its iconic look, but it made sure to comply with pedestrian safety standards.

The beauty of the Wagon is that it gives off an excitable image from the get-go. It has the signature Subaru frontline that we all know well, with just a touch of thrill coming from the race-ready details that make it stand out from any other wagon.

Consistency is part of every Subaru design. As beautiful as the outside is, the inside is just as impeccable. The sporty exterior feel extends all the way into the cabin, starting with premium leather that is wrapped around the steering wheel and the ergonomic, power adjustable seats. Passengers get that race-ready experience with the signature red stitching across all leather details, combined with sections finished in black carbon fiber.

Subaru has always believed in continuously upgrading the technology in its vehicles, while keeping it as easy to use and navigate for the driver. In the WRX, the infotainment monitor has been upgraded to an 11.6-inch touchscreen display that is the centerpiece for entertainment and connectivity functions, as well as climate control.

Despite the size looking like an embedded tablet, the system is a far cry from the Panasonic head unit from a few years ago. Still, there are times where its responsiveness leaves something to be desired. On the other hand, the instrument cluster is refreshingly simple, straightforward, and easy to read. It reflects all the pertinent information necessary for the driver without being overwhelming.

Technology is not only about entertainment and connection. For Subaru, it is about safety, above all. The WRX Wagon comes equipped with the Eyesight Driver Assist System that helps the driver in keeping tabs on his surroundings while he focuses on the road. Couple that with the Driver Attention Monitor which alerts the driver when it senses that his attention had gone elsewhere from the road; perfect for stop-and-go traffic, where spacing out is almost guaranteed.

This is on top of other advanced safety features such as Active Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Stability Control, Speed Sensing Door Locks, Anti-lock Braking System, Airbags, and Electronic Brake Distribution, among others.

Apart from being driver-centric and ergonomically-sound for both driver and passengers, it boasts of generous legroom, a comfortably reclinable rear bench, and a large capacity cargo hold. Additionally, the rear bench can be folded down flat to extend the trunk space to accommodate longer and larger items.

The Subaru WRX Wagon is more than a pretty face. It was created with everyday life in mind. When you get behind the wheel, it is immediately empowering, with an almost too-familiar feeling that gets you settled in right away. It offers the kind of usability that is complementing to the modern day’s fast-paced lifestyle, as well as the demands of the multi-faceted individual. Suffice to say that the WRX Wagon is simply the perfect partner for the daily grind—performance-level driving and living, every single day.

  1. I still love calling it the Levorg to this day. Hope this wagon lives on moving forward into the next generation. If they electrify it; for sure it’ll live on. Long live the wagon….and of course manual transmission too…
