BYD Is Going After The Honda City's Lunch Money With The New 2027 Dolphin G DM-i

If there’s one model in BYD’s current lineup that needs a makeover, it’s the Dolphin. Although great in value, the hatchback’s design is often seen as frumpy-looking. That’s all changed with the new Dolphin and, guess what, it also packs the segment’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain too.

The Dolphin G is far removed from the cheerful Dolphin. It has smaller, sharper headlights and a more aggressive front clip with active cooling ducts. Over to the side, it rides on sportier-looking black alloy wheels matching the blacked-out rear pillar. The blacked-out roof also points to the possibility of getting it with a panoramic sunroof.

Developed for overseas market specifically, the BYD Dolphin G DM-i, as it’s officially called, is capable of doing 1,000 kilometers on a single tank of gas. Full specs will be revealed in the coming weeks, but the Chinese carmaker has confirmed that it measures 4,160 mm in length and 1,825 mm in width placing it squarely in the middle of the B-segment hatchback segment.

As the B-segment’s first PHEV (those in the segment are often self-charging hybrids or mild hybrids), it’s very likely that the Dolphin G DM-i will share the Atto 2 DM-i’s powertrain. If that’s the case, it’ll use a 1.5-liter gasoline engine/electric motor combo good from anywhere between 164 to 212 horsepower. With either a 7.8-kWh or 18-kWh battery size—both having a LFP chemistry, expect between 40 to 90 kilometers of all-electric running.

The Dolphin G is confirmed so far for the European market, but depending on where it’ll be built, it’s very likely that it’ll join the local line-up sometime in 2027.
