It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that Motor Image, Subaru’s exclusive Philippine distributor, has been struggling of late. But just how bad has it been?
Despite the launch of the Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer and the availability of the Subaru Forester e-Boxer (read our review), sales volume is down 41 percent year-on-year this 2026 compared to the same period of 2025. From January to June 2026, Subaru has only sold a total of 217 units—enough to rank it 27th among CAMPI-TMA member brands.
The biggest culprit isn’t the lack of buyers, but rather, the lack of vehicle supply. According to sources, Subaru has only served 39.5 percent of all Forester e-Boxer customer orders for the first half of 2026. Year-to-date June sales have only reached 50 units for the best-selling compact SUV.
Looking ahead to the second half of 2026, Motor Image is expecting HEV supplies to gradually normalize helping them shorten customer wait times.
The same source has confirmed that the brand will also have one more surprise during the fourth quarter of 2026: the launch of the all-new Subaru Outback.
So far, that’s the only tidbit our source shared but, it must be noted that the Outback has now been split into two distinct models.
Launched in April last year, the all-new, seventh-generation Outback takes on a more upright, more SUV-like silhouette and stance compared to past generations. Bigger than ever before, this mid-sized 5-seater SUV features carryover powertrains—either a 2.5-liter normally-aspirated Boxer (180 horsepower and 241 Nm) or a turbocharged 2.4-liter (260 horsepower and 375 Nm of torque) both mounted to the brand’s signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and CVT.
So far, the combustion engine Outback still is not available with the Subaru Strong Hybrid System, but given that it shares the same platform as the Forester e-Boxer, there is a strong possibility for Subaru to find a way to shoehorn this engine in.
There’s also a possibility, however remote, that Subaru may also launch the e-Outback to the local market. Known as the Trailseeker elsewhere, this is an all-electric mid-sized SUV that offers 375 horsepower thanks to dual electric motors. With a 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery, it delivers around 418 kilometers of range between charges.
