Review: 2022 Nissan Kicks e-POWER VL

Among small SUVs, the Nissan Kicks has caught the attention of people for one thing: its all-electric powertrain. Initially, there’s been some confusion on the role of the on-board combustion engine (we’ll get to that later), but the fact of the matter is, it’s the only one in its class to be powered solely by an AC synchronous motor. As such, there’s no denying that it delivers a great drive. However, at the same time, it’s saddled by a package that’s simply run-of-the-mill everywhere else.

Review: 2023 Nissan Livina 1.5 VL

Basically, there are two reasons why automakers would design and build a car. Either they’re doing it for the sheer passion of it, or because they see it as a way to improve their bottom line. More often than not, a car exists somewhere between these two extremes. For Nissan, this could very well be almost their entire line-up from the Almera to the Patrol. In rare occasions, you get something born out of pure passion like the GT-R, the Z, and depending on who you ask, the LEAF. Now, for every so-called “passion project” there’s one whose sole mission is to improve their bottom line, and that’s where the all-new Nissan Livina comes in.

Thanks To E-POWER, The Nissan Kicks Could Be The Easiest SUV You Can Drive

Traditional hybrids have earned a reputation for being frugal, but not exactly fun to drive. Though technology has improved their performance recently, because the base is still a traditional internal combustion engine, it falls prey to some drawbacks. These include a delayed engagement of the gasoline engine (it takes a split-second for the engine to crank up at situations when power’s quickly needed such as overtaking) and drivetrain-associated power loss (they’re still equipped with a gearbox, after all).

Thanks To Our High Fuel Prices, Going Electrified Now Makes Monetary Sense

Thanks to today’s record fuel prices, readers have asked us to explore once more if going for an electrified vehicle—hybrid or battery electric—makes sense. For those who want a bit of a history, we’ve already done this exercise a couple of times in the past. The first was when Nissan brought in the all-electric Leaf for the first time in Southeast Asia. The second was when Toyota Motor Philippines brought in the Corolla Altis Hybrid. And the third was when Nissan Philippines officially launched the Leaf locally.
