Hyundai Philippines has been quiet lately, but they’ve turned a complete 180 degrees by throwing a virtual launch party for their 2021 Venue sub-compact SUV. A response to the growing demand for affordable small crossovers, the Venue slots below the Kona in both price and size.
Like the Kona, the Venue’s design is small, but big in character. It’s 129 millimeters shorter and 30 millimeters narrower than Hyundai’s compact crossover. It delivers a fresh interpretation of Hyundai’s signature design with solid and full volume wheel arches, strong character lines, and the brand’s trademark cascading front grille. It also gets the Kona’s composite (aka split) headlight design with LED position lights, halogen headlights, and static bending lights. Side-mirror turn signal indicators are standard as are LED taillights.
There are two variants on offer: the GL and GLS. The GL gets standard with 15-inch alloy wheels and a black grille. Meanwhile, the GLS gets 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, and a chrome grille.
Inside, it’s a back-to-basics approach with a direct focus on space and utility. Compared to the Kona, the Venue doesn’t give up much in terms of interior volume: total space is just down 76 liters (62 liters for the passenger area) compared to its bigger brother. It also has a 355-liter cargo hold.
Aside from a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, it features a rear covering shelf for added privacy and can be conveniently stowed along the rear seatback when not being used. Fabric seats are standard with the GLS getting a leather steering wheel and shift knob. Standard convenience features include a 3.5-inch mono TFT LCD screen for the driver, automatic climate control, USB ports, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen also doubles as the screen for the standard rear parking camera.
Under the hood is Hyundai’s 1.6-liter Gamma MPi engine putting out 123 horsepower and 151 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic. It also comes with a driver changeable driving modes with Drive (Eco, Sport, Normal) and Traction modes (Snow, Mud, Sand).
For safety, the 2021 Venue has a body made up of 46 percent Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS). It comes with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, and stability control as standard. The GLS variant adds rear parking sensors.
The 2021 Hyundai Venue will be sourced from Ulsan, South Korea. The base GL is priced at P 915,000 while the top-of-the-line GLS is priced at P 985,000. There are five colors on offer for both variants: Denim Blue, Lava Orange, Cosmic Gray, Polar White, and Phantom Black.
Wow! It comes standard with ABS, EBD and airbags! I'm honestly surprised, Hyundai PH. I think it isn't priced too bad.
