The 2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance is Out to Hunt BMW M3s

Lexus is giving what could be its V8 engine’s last hurrah by shoehorning it into their IS sports sedan. The result is this: the 2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance—powered by 472-horsepower V8 engine.

As the first model in the Lexus F Sport Performance line, the IS 500 provides a hefty power boost from the IS 350’s 3.5-liter V6. The 5.0-liter V8 under the hood makes 472 horsepower at 7,100 rpm and 535 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. Despite the drastically more powerful engine, it only gains 65 kilograms (curb weight is 1,765 kilograms). It delivers a 0 to 100 km/h time of about 4.5 seconds.

The IS 500 uses the same 8-speed automatic found in the IS 350 with Sport S and Sport S+ modes. This doesn’t just re-map the engine and transmission for enhanced performance, but also alters the steering assist and damping force to deliver a much sportier handling.

Other handling enhancements include a standard Dynamic Handling Package which includes the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), a Torsen limited slip differential, and a Yamaha rear performance damper. Brake cooling enhancements have also been made over the standard IS 350 F Sport with additional aerodynamic cooling and larger 14.0-inch two-piece aluminum front rotors and 12.7-inch rear rotors.

Distinguishing the IS 500 F Sport Performance is its raised hood (up nearly two inches) with sculpted center character lines, a lengthened front bumper and fender to fit the V8, 19-inch split-spoke Enkei alloy wheels, a black rear lip spoiler, and of course, the dual-stacked quad tailpipes.

Inside, drivers are greeted with black F Sport Performance badging on the heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and door sill scuff plates. It also comes standard with the IS F Sport accelerator pedal, brake pedal and footrest, but the combination instrumentation meter receives an updated startup animation that is exclusive to the IS 500.

The 2022 IS 500 F Sport Performance will arrive at U.S.-based Lexus dealerships first in the third quarter of this year.
