For P 21K, Mazda Can Unlock 12 Percent More Horsepower In The Mazda3, CX-30

Head-turning designs and an engaging driving experience are just two factors in Mazda’s move towards the premium space. Above all, the Japanese carmaker wants to create a deeper bond between car and driver, and this is seen through several of its ownership and aftersales programs.

Perhaps the most unique though is the so-called “Spirit Upgrade” program which was just launched in Japan for the Mazda3 and CX-30.

Available only for the diesel-fed Mazda3 and CX-30 variants in Japan, the Spirit Upgrade program unlocks 12 percent more horsepower by upgrading the ECU’s control program software. The new programming is said to reduce turbo lag by precisely controlling the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system.

As a result, these seventh-generation models see a power increase from 116 horsepower at 4,000 rpm to 130 horsepower at 4,000 rpm. Peak power aside, Mazda also promises better response from the throttle pedal and a flatter torque curve (maximum torque remains the same at 270 Nm).

The price for the upgrade isn’t too bad—46,200 yen (P 21,000). That said, it’s only available for selected chassis numbers—BP8P-100012 to BP8P-110288 for the Mazda3 and DM8P-100006 to DM8P-112162 for the CX-30.

Still, this bodes well for potential software upgrades on more Mazda models in the future. Imagine getting an OE ECU re-flash that unlocks more power (or features) and enables you to keep your warranty. Not bad.
