Toyota Motor PH Recalling GR Supra For Brake Issue

Toyota Motor Philippines is recalling a number of GR Supra models, proving that Gazoo Racing models aren’t immune to special service campaigns.

According to Toyota, the safety issue surrounds the vacuum pump. Under certain engine start conditions, the engine management software could cause the oil/vacuum pump which supplies vacuum for brake assistance (brake boost) to become damaged.

The specific engine start conditions consist of either: (1) pressing the start/stop button two times in rapid succession or (2) depressing the brake pedal very briefly while pressing the engine start/stop button.

Either way, this could result in loss of brake assist.

However, prior to a loss of brake assist, the full brake assist function is available for about four full brake applications, or approximately nine partial brake applications.

Full mechanical braking (without assist) is not affected.

An increase in stopping distance could occur which could increase the risk of a crash.

A total of 176 GR Supra units are affected locally, and these were produced from March 29, 2019 to June 5, 2020. To rectify the issue, a re-programming of the Engine Control Unit (ECU) is required. This is at no cost to GR Supra owners.

  1. In my opinion, it is now alarming that the car brands considered 'reliable and durable' such as Toyota and Honda are being hounded by different issues such as faulty fuel pumps and unsafe airbags, to name a few. If Toyota and Honda have these issues, what can we expect with the other brands? Which car brands can still be considered reliable? ☹️
