Here's Another Look At The 2022 Toyota Avanza Before Its Global Launch

About a week before its official global debut on November 10 at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), more photos of the all-new 2022 Toyota Avanza managed to leak online.

Last time, spy photographers managed to snap pictures of the top-of-the-line Avanza Veloz in what looked to be a showroom of some kind. Today, these photos came out, and it gives us our clearest look at the regular aka non-Veloz variant.

It’s immediately noticeable that the non-Veloz Avanza looks much more restrained, and in our opinion, better balanced overall. The same slim LED headlights remain, but the rest of the front end is different. The Avanza looks to get a smaller upper grille/larger lower grille combo which is the reverse of what we’ve seen in the Avanza Veloz. Moreover, it eschews the technical-looking grille pattern for a horizontal motif that puts it inline with the likes of the Vios, Camry, and Corolla Altis.

Compared to the current Avanza Veloz, Toyota has added much more distinction with the regular Avanza getting different taillights and bumpers. It also loses the taillight garnish that extends the full width of the tailgate.

Along with the new photos, journalists in Indonesia seem to have uncovered the Avanza’s variants. The move to a unibody front-wheel drive platform comes with it all-new 1.3- and 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engines. Toyota has yet to reveal the peak horsepower and torque, but the safe bet would be that these are related to the Vios’s powertrain. A manual gearbox remains standard, but the 4-speed automatic has been retired in favor of a CVT.

For the Indonesian market, a total of 8 variants will the launched, and this isn’t counting the premium-colored version (likely a shade of pearlescent white). Prices start at 206.2 million Rupiah (P 728,291) and top out at P 292.8 million Rupiah (P 1.034 million), according to the leaks.

By comparison, the outgoing Avanza starts at 187.6 million Rupiah (P 662,539), and goes all the way up to 243.8 million Rupiah (P 861,019). This equates to a 10 to 20 percent price increase versus the outgoing Avanza. Theoretically, this could mean that the 2022 Avanza would reach close to P 1.2 million when it reaches here. That said, it does come with a wealth of new features including Toyota Safety Sense or TSS.

Is Toyota right to move the Avanza towards a more mainstream space, or should they have retained its no-frills positioning?
