All-New 2023 Toyota Wigo Makes Its Debut

This is it. Just a day before its Malaysian equivalent, the Perodua Axia, makes its world debut, Toyota Indonesia has decided to go first and unveiled the all-new 2023 Wigo,.

Compared to the Perodua version, the all-new Wigo (Indonesian name Agya) features a different grille and bumper treatment. The design, with its larger opening that cuts into the bumper bears a family resemblance to the likes of the Yaris and Vios. The DRLs on the Toyota version are positioned vertically as opposed to the horizontal treatment seen in its Malaysian equivalent. The horizonal lighting elements, with LEDs on higher trim variants, are shared, however.

The big surprise coming out of Indonesia is the availability of a GR Sport variant. Replacing the current Wigo’s TRD S variant, the sportified version of the sub-compact A-segment hatchback features a more aggressive grille, larger rims (15s versus 14s on the regular Wigo), and even a two-tone color motif. It looks to have a wrap-around body kit with a rear spoiler as well.

Built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) like the Raize and Avanza, the all-new Wigo offers larger dimensions for a larger cargo space than its predecessor (passenger tandem distance, at 910 mm is the same as before) . Measuring at 3,760 mm in length, 1,665 mm in width, and 1,505 mm in height (wheelbase is at 2,525 mm)—it’s 100 mm longer and 65 mm wider than the current Wigo (wheelbase is up by 70 mm). Ground clearance, meanwhile is set at 150 mm.

The shift to a new platform means that it’ll gain the same engine as the Raize too. The 1.2-liter WA-VE engine gives the all-new Wigo Honda Brio-matching power figures: 88 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 112 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. It will also have a new gearbox with the 4-speed torque converter being replaced by the D-CVT.

It must be noted that the Malaysian market version, the Perodua Axia, gets a smaller 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine. This carryover engine, with 67 horsepower and 91 Nm of torque is expected to be used on the Wigo’s Daihatsu equivalent, the Ayla too.

The Wigo GR Sport also receives unique tuning to its steering and suspension system for improved handling, per Toyota.

Inside, the 2023 Wigo features a cabin very reminiscent of the Raize. In fact, it borrows the steering wheel, start/stop button, and free-standing infotainment system from the sub-compact SUV. However, the A-segment hatchback does skimp in some areas. For example, it has a simpler AC system, while the door cards do not contain any soft padding.

  1. Toyota have always got a better design than daihatsu and the rebadge version of axia. Agya have always looks more agressive, just like the second facelift (2020). I mean just look at the front grille and the DRL. Rumour has it this agya one will get WA-VE engine 1.2NA like the one in rocky/raize. The GR variant got a bit tune of GR engineering from the handling and suspension. Well done toyota, can't wait for the price though.

    1. Yeah. And the overall of design is a huge departure from the outgoing model. I'm sure of how the interior of this new generation Agya/Wigo will look like (possibly a similar layout with the Raize/Avanza/Veloz/Perodua Axia).

    2. Not a rumour, but it's already confirmed that new Agya/Wigo will be using 1.2 WA-VE engine

    3. That's great though but I'm disappointed that the 1.0 Turbo engine from the Raize/Rocky won't be offered for this model.

  2. Kiddos to Daihatsu and Toyota for all the great work on developing the all new Agya/Ayla/Wigo. I appreciate the new design and its a big step forward from the previous model, I'm welcoming of Toyota/Daihatsu finally ditching the 4-speed auto for a CVT for a better fuel economy. So these people who hate the previous model can appreciate this new model.

    1. This is the reason why I would stick to AT. CVT if by the time needed to replace na is costly. Unless you are the type that will sell the car after 5 yrs of use. Maintainability is still priority over the fuel efficiency of CVT.

    2. Anony 9.53pm, so your the one who said that he spend 65k on replacement of cvt of 1year old vios. Hmmnn your lying, how can you spend 65k when in fact a 1year old vios is still covered by warranty. And never i heard any vios with faulty cvt

  4. Surprised that the new Wigo comes with different AC modes and a heater when all the other Daihatsu-yota products don't (even in Indonesia). I thought they would cut costs here the most since this is their entry level vehicle but that doesn't seem to be the case if these promotional photos are representative of the product that will be going to consumer's hands. I hope the interior doesn't rattle after just 4 months of use.. unlike the Raize, which while has solid underpinnings, has a lousily built interior.

    1. My sister has a 5 month old Raize Turbo (I get to borrow it from time to time) with around 5.7k kms on its odometer. It doesn't have any rattling sound in the interior. Mind you, she already drove it to Ilocos Norte recently from NCR. Still no rattling sound inside the car.

    1. It should be. Because most of the drivers of wigos are noobs who only recently learned how to drive or women.

  6. How much does it cost?
