Did MIAS Just Reignite Its Rivalry With PIMS?

Did the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) just reignite its rivalry against the Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS)?

In what seemed like a direct response against PIMS which just held its official launch and press con last May 6 (MIAS never holds a pre-show press con), Worldbex Services International, the organizer of MIAS just posted its official numbers on its Facebook page.

To break it down, here’s how it went:
  • Foot Traffic: 180,000
  • Number of Cars on Display: 250+
  • Number of Custom and Classic Cars on Display: 54
  • Total Floor Exhibition Area: 23,000 square meters
They even outlined the number of actual vehicle reservations (with fees collected), seemingly cementing MIAS as bonafide selling show. And before you ask, no, BYD did not declare how many units they sold during the four-day event.
  • GWM: 112 units
  • UAAGI (BAIC, Chery, Foton, Jetour, Lynk & Co, Radar): 803 units
  • MG: 700+ units
  • Deepal: 50+ units
  • Omoda and Jaecoo: 187 units
  • Geely: 124 units
  • Changan: 105 units
The timing is suspicious given that MIAS ended a full month ago, but just in time to steal a bit of thunder from PIMS.

Compared to MIAS, which is organized by a specialized exhibition and events management company, PIMS is organized by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI). The largest automotive industry group in the country holds its flagship show biennially.

Out of 32 brands under CAMPI, 17 will participate at this year’s show with brands like BMW, Changan, Ford, Hyundai, Mazda, and Mercedes-Benz notably absent.

In addition, 18 aftermarket exhibitors will join PIMS.

CAMPI PR Committee head, Elvin Luciano confirmed that more than 150 new vehicles will be on display at PIMS with 75 of them being electrified.

For his part, CAMPI President Jing Atienza has stated a more modest target for PIMS with a public attendance of just 50,000 people.

However, Atienza stressed that PIMS is never just about the foot traffic. Without naming MIAS directly, Atienza says that PIMS is always looking out to make their show a much better experience than the last—be it for the general public, its stakeholders, or the media. Among the plans in place include wider spaces between exhibition spaces and the retention of ticket prices (P 200 for general admission) as they were in 2024—the last time PIMS was held.

Whether MIAS just took a potshot at PIMS, or the posting is purely coincidental shouldn’t matter. At the end of the day, what matters is that the Philippine automotive industry is still showing its resilience at a time when industry as a whole thought that the current energy crisis would have an even broader impact on new vehicle sales.

Thanks to the availability fuel efficient ICE options as well as HEVs, PHEVs, and BEVs, CAMPI says that the auto industry is still on track to see new car sales dip just 10 percent in 2026 (based on the first quarter of the year). This shows the resiliency of the industry as a whole.

  2. If MG did sell 700 units at MIAS then that one event effectively matches their usual monthly sales numbers. It means na need lng tlga nila marketing because people are choosing to buy them when their products are presented well.

    1. I guess the 700 units is mostly the new phev 7 seater max something that goes for just a tad less than 1.4m

    2. Literally "MIA"s ung mga legacy brands that you're looking for. Be disappointed in them instead for not delivering anything.

KIA nga lang ung nandun sa MIAS na hindi Chinese brand at least they had the courage to participate and deliver the EV5 (although I was hoping for the EV3 instead).

  5. MIAS. PIMS. For as long as you do not hold the show at a venue with adequate parking for visitors, you provide less than an ideal ezperience. There is very limited parking around WTC. Across the street is a lot overwhelmed by a loooong line of cars trying to park. The lot is poorly maintained and beat up by bus utilities. It has ONE entrance. I gave up and pulled out of the queue. My son and I had to pass up this one with MIAS. SAYANG. Next event, pls try nearby PICC or MOA instead?

  6. What happened to MIAS? It used to be a prestigious auto show. But now it's becoming more and more like a Chinese car show.
