2027 Mazda CX-5 Scores A Top Safety Pick+ Award From IIHS

After scoring a 5-star safety rating at both the ANCAP and Euro NCAP, the all-new, third-generation CX-5 has scooped up yet another prestigious safety award. Most recently, the compact SUV received the 2026 Top Safety Pick+ award—the highest award in vehicle safety bestowed by the US-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Earlier this year it was announced that Mazda had earned more IIHS 2026 Top Safety Pick+ awards than any other brand. With the all-new CX-5 earning another, it has now received its ninth.

Additionally, this award marks a significant milestone for Mazda; the brand has now earned 100 IIHS Top Safety Pick awards since the program began in 2008, with 74 of those being the Top Safety Pick+, a testament to nearly two decades of continuous improvement and leadership in safety engineering.

Other Mazda models earning the 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award are the 2026 Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, CX-30, CX-50 (including CX-50 Hybrid), CX-70, CX-70 PHEV, CX-90, and CX-90 PHEV.

To qualify for 2026 Top Safety Pick+, vehicles need “good” ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front and side tests as well as “acceptable-” or “good”-rated headlights across all trim levels. In addition, winners need standard front crash prevention systems that earn a “good” rating in the pedestrian test and an “acceptable” or “good” rating in the vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test. If optional front crash prevention systems are offered, they must also meet those criteria.

Mazda also received the Consumer Reports’ first-ever Safest New Car Brand award. Not only does Consumer Reports take into the IIHS results into consideration, but it also reflects a rigorous, holistic review of real‑world safety performance, including braking and emergency handling and in‑vehicle control usability. Their strong results demonstrate the carmaker’s long‑standing belief that true safety comes from the seamless integration of advanced engineering, intuitive technology, and vehicles that respond predictably and confidently to the driver.

  1. I thought putting everything on touch screens was supposed to basically disqualify cars from getting 5 stars on Euro NCAP? Is that not implemented yet?
